64 bit linux on Compaq

Thread Starter
Ok Just installed OpenSUSE Linux 64 bit on my Compaq Presario V3000. Now I know that I've got Broadcom Wifi, not to sure about the ethernet though.

The main thing is I absolutely cannot connect to the internet not through the wireless, not wired through the ethernet, and here's a weird one not even through a USB cable to my cable modem, even though SUSE autodetects the connection.

I've downloaded the broadcom windows drivers undoubtedly 32 bit and try to work it with ndiswrapper but nothing. I've also downloaded the linux broadcom drivers (not sure if they were the correct ones) but have no clue about how to install them so that they are used.

What do I do?

PS. Whats the Linux equivalent of Dreamwever Thanks

at least with 32bit you can go ahead and use ndiswrapper if all else fails. also why suse? personally i am not a fan (just today i testdrove 10.1 dvd and it was....mixed review)... give ubuntu a shot and see how she goes...

Next time please use the CODE tags instead of quote, CODE keeps preformatting which makes it MUCH easier to read on these boards, it is VERY difficult to read that lspci. At any rate you have the forcedeth driver loaded, which means you probably have an nvidia ethernet adaptor, and it is showing in ifconfig so it is probably working...

However you have no IP address set to it, or route for outside traffic. You can set both of those by hand easily enough, but are you trying to use DHCP to obtain this information(IP address mainly, the route would automatically be set up based off that)? Or will setting it up by hand work? Seablade

To set up an ethernet interface by hand(Just to see if it works) with a static address...

ifconfig eth0 up XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX netmask XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Where the first XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is your IP address for that machine/interface and the second is the subnet mask for that interface(Usually 255.255.255.0 works for most people on their home network here)

the second step involves setting up the route to the outside...

route add default gw XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX dev eth0

where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is the IP address of your router or server, or if you dont have one, just remove it.

The man page on ifconfig and route are good reading for basic system administration in as far as networks are concerned.

I tried that and basically still nothing, and yes I'd like the IP address assigned by DHCP rather than supplying a static one.

If it helps when do connect directly to my cable modem either by ethernet or USB, it does say acquiring network address and eventually seems, showing me that the computer is connected, but nothing beyond that works as it should regarding the internet.

Ok, I would need the output of those commands and then the output of... ifconfig route run with no arguments to make sure they were being set up correctly. If they are, then the next step is to ping your interface(Whatever IP address you gave it before) and then your router/server. If it is getting that far it is being set up correctly and either your default route is incorrect, or your router is blocking it, either are possible, but lets see how far we get. Seablade
