ACER Aspire 5040

Hello,

I am currently on the process of aquiring an Acer Aspire 5043, it comes with an ATI X200M (integrated graphics card). My question concerns the dedicated memory of that card, since it seems there are 4 different versions of it. The ACER website says it has 64mb external memory and up to 512 shared. Can anyone tell me if these video card has any dedicated memory (in this specific model) or if it is all shared?

Thanks for your help.

To my knowledge there are two versions of the X200M. One for Intel based chips, the other for AMD. As I understand it neither of them has any dedicated memory, it is all shared system memory. However all this is probably academic unless you tell us what you intend using it for.

Acer 5043

As you say there are amd and intel models of the x200m video card, but it seems that there are four different types:
- one without any memory of its own
- another with 32 mb
- another with 64 mb
-and finally one with 128 mb.

They can each borrow a max of 128 mb from the computers own ram.
My question goes as to which model does the acer 5043 come with. If you could answer that I would deeply appreciate it.

According to this review, the Aspire 5043 doesn't use the X200M anyway, it uses the X1300.

I was looking for some information about this notebook. why in the review the guy say it comes with x1300? I only found the version with X200M.

X200M is good?

However all this is probably academic unless you tell us what you intend using it for. ie: game titles, etc

I'm a game programmer, and i need a good gpu to do shaders, etc.

Play games too, not in the highest resolutions and setttings.

Could X1300 fit my needs?

I doubt it very much. Especially if you are mapping stuff like far cry. I mean it will work, but with everything on low.

X1300 will not fit your needs since its a budget card , and offers a merely 10,4 GB/sec memory bandwith, even if the card shares system memory you will still see no improvemend what so ever.

The shared ram its just one more commercial trick for lying about the dedicated memory of the card. exp X1300 512 ram (128 dedicated, 384 shared), since most stores only write one number (the sum )

The video ram used by gfx cards is working at higher frequencies than the system's memory (especially the high end montels), using shared and dedicated memory your GPU sychronise the dedicated memory clock to run at lower speeds matching the shared ones.
Gain in memory buffer, loose in frequency and system available ram.

For a mid solution check the GeForce Go 7600 16 GB/s and ATI X1600 15 GB /s and in my opinion try to buy montels with dedicated memory only.
