Has anyone else been able to properly enable the realtek s/pdif output for use with a digital decoder? I am using a 3.5mm stereo to red+white RCA connector, the red side plugged into the coaxial input on the digital decoder. Thanks.

Heres what you need to do...you need the following...

1. Latest realtek drivers 1.47
2. Enable the SPDIF out thru the software
3. A 3.5mm rca connector (pics to follow)
4. A DIGITAL COAXIAL cable
5. A receiver/decoder that allows DIGITAL COAX IN

sorry the #5 pic reference is supposed to be #4...i cant find the edit button...

but once you do all the stuff above....your receiver needs to be set to the digital coaxial setting and then you should be able to hear everything as a PCM stream. To get dolby digital or DTS you need to set your DVD software as SPDIF out and then you will get digital out. Hope this helps!

Hey andoOKC, thanks for your help, but this is where things get messy, I have everything configured properly, and i have another computer that uses an identical setup(coax through RCA) and it works fine, but when I try it with my laptop, there is no digital signal. Same dvd software, same speaker setup same cables, the only thing that is different between the 2 systems, is the sound card. Ive tried the latest realtek drivers, as well as contacting sager tech support, but its been useless so far.

well have you for kicks tried a mini plug toslink cable...maybe yours has an optical component to it like the ASUS notebooks...

tell me exactly which Realtek sound card you have and which notebook you have it on

No unfortunately there is only coaxial output.

Realtek ALC880 on a Sager 5750.

From what I understand there is another version of the ALC880 codec, called the ALC880(D), for digital, and from what I have gathered from technical documents, the 5750 has the standard ALC880, not capable of outputting a digital stream, although sager directly has told me that the 5750 is capable of a digital stream, so Im not sure who to believe now..

Believe me, I have the exact same set up as you and yesterday I connected my laptop with the exact setup as above to my Pioneer Home Theater receiver via digital coax cable. I used PowerDVD 7 and set it to SPDIF out and I had sound. Also I had a PCM stream coming out of my reciever for normal operating sounds either from winamp or streaming online music. Maybe you have a hardware problem...

Did you activate the SPDIF out thru the realtek manager?

Awesome, well its nice to hear that from someone who actually knows what theyre talking about vs. sagers tech who read me the manual..is there an option in the drop down menu for you or is it just the enable/disable menu?

ok double click the realtek manager, when it pops up, click the AUDIO I/O tab, then you will see DIGITAL button and its black, beside it will be a wrench, click that and then select 48khz and select OUTPUT DIGITAL AUDIO SOURCE, click ok then on the AUDIO I/O screen look at the black button in the upper right of the ANALOG section and click the pictures of the speakers and select SPDIF OUT.

From then you should be able to connect the SPDIF from the back of the notebook and into your receiver. Let me know

Yeah, see thats what I figured too, thats how I have everything and unfortunately still no signal...

you are sure you have a digital coax cable and you are sure your receiver is set....im sure you know all this for sure but its better to exhaust the obvious before resorting to the desperate (send the notebook back)

Yeah, dead sure, 110%. Thats why this is so confusing, it works flawlessly, switches automatically and everything when plugged into one comp, but not the other. I might crack the laptop open to see if the jack is in fact conected to anything haha. damn.

seems to be a hardware issue...
