The few beta versions I tried were 32 bit and ran slower than (insert vulgarity here). Will we have a good chance that the 64 bit version will run with full hardware support on our laptops, and still provide good performace?

The final result should run "decent", but it will not perform as well as XP. Much like the transition from 2000 to XP, you will be taking a performance hit (huge hit in some areas, smaller in others) in exchange for added features and security. I for one won't be touching with a 10' LAN cord on anything less than dual core, 2GB, RAID 0 except for evaluation purposes. It simply has entirely too much overhead from the new (and yes, "pretty") interface and additional background services to get acceptable performance on anything less unless you are just looking to do general web browsing, office work, etc.

Recent reviews of Vista show that performance wise it's almost the same as XP. At least when you don't run into any bugs If your current/new/future laptop doesn't meet the specs Thunder listed don't bother with Vista unless you just want to see it in action.

I was hoping that my 6805 might last until after windows went mainstream 64bit, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. Luckily I'm just about due for my warranty replacement from Bestbuy, so I'll probably hold onto my 6805 until a Vista edition laptop goes on sale next year.

Yeah that sounds like a wise choice to me, at this point in the game, I'll keep using my 7405GX until JAN 07 then maybe spring for a new one w/ Vista, but have the 7405GX as a 2nd Notebook w/ XP PRO SP2 I'm real sure my 7405GX still will have some life left to it long after Vista go's RTM and even more so long after that

part of the reason it runs slow in the OS itself the new video driver model and Aero, because all the windows are all separate Direct3D objects now (instead of crappy GDI). the old driver model only could feasably run 1 D3D object at a time, so the old cards, built around that, wont run the desktop too well (you can turn it off and go back to XP style GUI, but then its not so pretty then )

ive got RC1 on my 7422 right now, seemed to run fine for me. havent thrown any games or anything on it yet.
