Thanks.

Has anyone request BIOS update from Apple? I think it's the only way to get it fix.

Hi, Ken! I sent couple of messages asking for a BIOS update to Apple.com:s forums. But I think we should contact someone directly in Apple. I just don't know who. Also, I'm not sure how keen Apple is helping Windows XP users. The worst case scenario is that, they would just release a bios update for MAC OS X.. but then again, I guess the same bios update would fix the windows side as well, because its the graphics cards bios.

There's lot's of angry MacBook Pro users there, so I think many of us would be very happy when this issue is fixed.

And why not to ask it to ATI ? Actually, the faulting part in the chain is not McBook, nor Asus, but the ATI-X1600 card, isn't it ? And what is changed in BIOS is the VGA part of it.
And ask ATI to send the new VGA Bios to all laptop manufacturers.

Ken, what do you think about it ?

ATI will only response to manufacturer regarding to the graininess issue, I think some people already tried contact ATI before but didn't get any response. VGA BIOS is part of the NB BIOS and it can only be flash with the NB BIOS, so I think the best way to solve it is to contact Apple direct.

How about pick up the phone and call their tech support? does Apple even aware of the graininess issues?

What happened? I don't go NBR much, how about show us the link?

Here http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...t=86617&page=3 and here http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...t=86371&page=3 , about the last posts.

Anyway, I heard that ATI has not yet included support for X1700 (such as in F3Jp and A8Jp) even in their latest driver (Cat 6.11). Why is this? Is it because the X1700 is still new or something?

Yeah, I backed u up in NBR. Quite funny tho! I took some photos of my MacBook Pro screen with my digitalcamera with macro lens. The photos have been taken very near the screen, so you can clearly see the grainy pixel patterns. The first photo is supposed to be a solid black on a website background. The second one is taken from gradient fill (gray to black) in Photoshop. The third one is a picture of a car tire. And yes the same kind of grain was created by ATI Mobility X1600 graphics card (same as apple is using) on ASUS computers, and they fixed it with a bios update. So I think there could be a way to update the bios for Mac as well. Here are the pictures: http://www.laspalmas.nu/macbookpro_grain.jpg

f3ja installed bios 206, grainess is gone.

Now if they only fixed the earphone audio output poor quality and the fan always on while in AC mode maybe I don't have to return it (will return it next week).

Are you talking about updating a MacBook Pro with bios 206? If yes, where can I download it?

They don't. They use EFI(well the newer Intel based ones at least):

However I believe the BIOS updates from ASUS also update the VGA BIOS on the graphics cards, not just the motherboard.

betonfoot, cifroes was talking about upgrading his/her F3Ja with BIOS version 206. It's not an MBP... Isn't there any news about the graininess issue fix in Apple's forum?
A new BIOS is available on ASUS site for F3Ja. Its Id is 206... but with this new BIOS, graininess is back
So I flashed back to the 206T01 provided by Gentech, and all is OK now.

Why ASUS is providing a new BIOS not taking into account bug fixing of previous beta Bios ????
And again an new BIOS (207) which doesn't solve graininess.
The issue is that all these BIOS still include VGA Bios 009.012.001.014.A05308.005 instead of 009.012.001.014.A05308.T16 (as in 206T01 Beta)

Please, Mr Asus, if you read me, please integrate the right VGA Bios in the latest Bios !
