Someone please assist me in troubleshooting this machine

I just built a new conroe machine and I was totally stoked. Now that it's somewhat running, I must say I'm pissed and I hate myself because I'm obviously not as smart as I think I am...

Anyway, new components:
Gigabyte mobo, will get model number if needed
E6600
2gb dual channel ram
DVD drives, bla bla, those probably aren't the problem so I'll skip the rest

Used components:
evga 7900gtx (this has given me problems before. in the old system, it would overheat and artifact)
WD 160gb Raptor drive (this gave me problems as well. i installed it as a secondary drive, and it would lock up the system when i wanted to put something on it. i fixed that issue sort of, but the system never ran right so I took it out)

The problem:
Everything installed smooth as butter. Newest drivers from nvidia.com, all that cool jazz. Installed 3dmark06 and ran it. It ran the Proxycon test, the Firefly test, then it went to the CPU test (i think it skipped the flying boat monster in lake test). Toward the end of the CPU test, it put some funny colored bars on the screen, then got an error. Something about D3d or some such file being corrupt. After that, the screen goes blank at random intervals between 1-5 seconds. All processes are slow, but you can still make it shut down by itself. So, I reinstalled directX and reinstalled 3dmark. Same thing happens. I haven't had much time to work on stuff on it or test it in actual games or anything. 3dMark05 ran through after the reinstall of DX, but after it was done, it did the little thingy with the screen flashing on and off and everything running extremely slow.

I went into task manager while it was in it's flashy state, and the CPU is at 0% usage...

I have had that same error on other machines as well. Perhaps 3dmark06 doesn't support core duo (laptop) or core 2 duo (the PC in question) somehow? I don't know.

I'm hoping it's the video card, because I'm going to warranty it from the overheating anyway, but if anyone knows differently, or some way to find out, I'd love to know. Thanks.

it works with Duo laptops, I ran it on mine with no problems..

any reason why you haven't already RMA'd the video card?? if you know there's a problem with it then it really doesn't make sense to continue using it... plus the more I read around, the GPU seems to affect quite a few things on the system.

Finally got the RMA about 45 minutes after I posted this. I've been waiting and dickering and stuff for about 2.5 weeks... And there's only like 4 days left on my warranty. Phew. Now, I just have to hope that it isn't somehow related to the hard drive.

Did you get the D3D error with the Raptor running or a different HD??
If it wasn't the Raptor and nothing else with the hard drive you're using now is giving you issues.. I wouldn't think it was the HD..

Yeah, it was with the raptor. I'm hoping that's not the problem, and since my m90 gave me the same error before i updated directx, I don't think it is. I almost think its a software error, or else an incompatibility with 7900gtx-based cards. I removed it for RMA, so I won't be able to try it with different drivers. Thanks for the assistance, I wouldn't have started this thread if I had known my RMA would get to me so shortly afterward. I just ordered a 7950gx2, anyone wanna buy a 7900gtx (it'll be a brand new replacement)?
