i m sorry that i might overlook something or do not understand the scenario, but if the laptop is yours with the XP sticker (or OEM), then it should not be an issue with calling in for an activation
i replaced/ugraded cpu many times, also flashing bios to an non-emachines version, installing new larger/faster hard drive with fresh XP installation (not just imaging the disk) - things do go wrong with the hardware.
each time when the system requires an activation that i must call in, i just did and explained to the ms support technician the situation, and that was that.
one might have to spend 1/2-1 hr on the phone, but what the heck, it is a crazy rule that requires the consumer's participation to help uncle bill keeping tab of his sales, but then so what? trying to work around would waste more time and effort in my view
