I was just wondering if anyone has tried putting more than 2gb ram in the 9750, or if the 2gb is simply a chipset limitation? I've seen that the 9880's can supposedly handle 3.8gb, would like for my 9750 to do the same - virtual machines take up a lot of memory!

It is PHYSICALLY possible. But the standard version of windows XP will not recognize it. Other applications will such a windows server 2003 or x64 will and when VISTA comes out it will support it as well. If it is a virtual machine your running then, yes. In the proper applications you can use 4GB of memory. There a ton of threads out there that tinker with this topic:

Just google "4gigs of RAM in windows" and youll find limitless guides and applications on the topic

I know that it is possible with the OS, I'm just wondering about the 9750 itself - all of the specs on it that I have seen say a max of 2gb, and I've seen reports of the 9880 supporting more (sorry, the 32bit XP limit is 2.8, not 3.8 like I said earlier), but I have not yet found any reports of anyone trying it on the 9750. I'm running the RC1 release of Vista 64bit, so shouldn't be any problems there, I'm just wondering if the chipset itself may be limited or if this has just not been done in the 9750 yet.
Or if just no one is making the ram for it - so far I have yet to find 2gb ddr400 sticks anywhere :/

It is the last statement that answers your question. Also, the D900T (Sager NP98xx) notebooks had 4 memory slots instead of 2 which is why they could physically support and hold the higher amount of memory.

If I read KIA's webiste correctly, the VIA K8T890+VT8237A chipsets on the 9750 motherboard supports 2 gb of RAM per slot, for 4gb total.
However as bigtrouble77 says, the 9750 may need a bios update to support 2gb sticks once they are released. And, as Charles points out, XP (32 bit) can only address 4 gb RAM total and reserves 1.2GB of RAM addresses for system hardware, leaving only 2.8gb of addresses for system RAM.

The only way to get TOTAL use out of 4gigs of memory, is if you upgrade to windows x64 or simiair OS. Keep in mind, however, that over 80% of average programs in x64 will be emulated in WOWx32. Truthfully, unless your runing a strenuous. program like Auto Cad theres no way you could see gains with that much RAM over 2GB.(vitural systems maybe) Most programs out right now are not even designed to use it. So unless you are a Graphic Designer, Arcitech, or an extreme multitasker, your wasting your money. Sure you could buy it now with hopes that youll use it for vista or in the future, but chances are by the time this comes around you could pay about half the price for the same memory upgrade.

Actually, I believe winxp supports 4gb of memory. But there's a catch... It includes your pagefile too. So if you have 2gb of memory and a 2gb pagefile you can add additional memory, but windows will not recognize it. You have to either disable the pagefile or reduce it. Or get linux. ;-)
Here are some things that can take advantage of 2gb+:
3d Animation
CAD
Audio Production (I could easily use up 4gb in some of my sessions)
Video Production/Compositing (I could justify 16gb here)
Servers
UseNET (some groups have over 2gb of headers)
Software Development

No actually the page file is not included. The best tecnical explaination (for the 915 chipset) can be found here:

Basicly 32-bit windows has to allow space for USB ports and graphics memory. This limitation applies to the 945 chipset also.
Inorder to access a full 4bg you will need a 64-bit OS and a chipset that will address 33-bits (8bg).
