Window edges tearing

Hi

I've got a question for all you linux gurus..This has been a problem that I've had since the installation of ubuntu and it's kinda getting annoying. When ever I move a window verticaly, everything looks fine but, when i move the window horizontally, i get pretty bad video tearing. I did some searches on google but never really found an answer. I'm pretty sure it's not the graphics hardware at the resolution (1680x1050) and glxgears runs fine.

Any help will be appreciated

first of all do you have fglrx installed? if i remember reading correctly fglrx and x300 are a bad mix....so watch yourself.

you can always install xgl/compiz to resolve all your tearing issues....at a price, but the extra eye candy is worth it imo...the cube ftw!

Yeah, I have fglrx installed
Code:
ruben@ruben-laptop:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: MOBILITY RADEON X300 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

ruben@ruben-laptop:~$
Do you have tearing with eye candy on? I've also tried reducing the res, but the problem still exists...My GPU is weak, but not THAT weak

well i have a 9700 which really isn't a great card, but running xgl/compiz just fine and dandy....slight bits of artifacting (mostly on restore from taskbar function) here and there but no show-stoppers

I do wish there is some kind of vsync that could be implemented to prevent tearing. I noticed that it's pretty bad with the compiz window wobbles. When using the regular metacity theme the tearing is there, but it's not much worse than windows. I notice more of a feeling of low frame rates when moving windows in gnome (that's the best description I can come up with). I'm really hypersensitive to this stuff.

This is one of the major criticisms I have of xwindows. Resizing windows is also much choppier than it should be. It gives the impression that the desktop isn't quite as stable as it should be. Macs have that rock solid feel to them. It's frustrating because I find gnome more stable than the mac or windows desktop.

to me recently that became a joke. i know it has everything to do with xgl... but my gnome's stability has been down the sh*tter latelly....lol. its ok, i can always log into my non-xgl setup if i wanna do some gaming (read: ET) or need stability beyond that of xgl.

Yeah, what really set me off was when is doing some stuff with flash mx on a mac at my school. I noticed that when i moved windows around, the refresh rate was so high and there was no tearing what so ever...But once i did anything, the fps dropped like a rock in water. Still, the movement of the windows were very nice.

Note: Even if you drug me, your still not going to get me to buy a mac
Home Brews with ghetto phase change systems FTW!!!
