Inspiron 6400 / E1505 - Partition for no aparant reason

Hi, I just got deliveryof my new inspiron laptop yesterday and I ordered an 80GB 7200 RPM hard drive. In windows explorer I cen see 2 hard disks: one abelled the normal 'C' drive and the second labelled 'Backup D.' The normal drive has 52Gb of space and the other has 17gb. For one thing this does not add up to the 80 that I ordered and the second, the 17gb one is empty. I Dont know what dell have done so could someone shed some light on this please.

One other thing is that there are 53 things running on task manager: isnt this a bit much considering that it is brand new? what can i do to reduce the number?

The 2nd one is just a separate partition on your hard drive. There are also three other partitions: a 47 meg diagnostic partition, a 1-2 gig partition for dell media direct, and a 3-5 gig partition for the restore utility. You need to include those in adding up your total. The total will only add up to 74 gigs anyway because hard drive makers calculate space one way and windows calculates it another. Google on "misleading hard drive specifications" and you'll find out why.

As for the number of processes, Dell installs a world of junkware on their computers. You can uninstall it, run pc-decrapifier, or reformat if you got the windows xp reinstall disk.
