DVI output "artifacts"

I connected an LCD via DVI and now I'm getting "artifacts" on the LCD output. (Nothing to do with the common artifact problem). Everything looks fine on the laptop. This LCD was connected to a different computer with the same DVI cable and it was working just fine. If I take a screenshot, the artifacts are not present so it seems to be an issue with the way data is sent to the LCD. Any ideas? The LCD is a viewsonic 2025wm.

God I'm hating this so much. If I can't resolve it, you'll probably be seeing a video of a 8790 being smashed with a baseball bat. A new issue every minute.

Was told that the DVI maximum resolution is 1600x1200 which would explain my problems. I would like to confirm it myself, but I can't find any information. Does anybody know where I can find these specs?

The guy said that a DVI=>VGA would help, but I don't understand why. If the video card can't drive a 1680x1050 resolution over DVI, why would converting the signal to analog fix anything?

To answer myself,
http://www.mtechlaptops.com/specific...mtechd470k.htm

External Monitor: port type; max resolution \t1600x1200

Now I just need to figure out if a DVI=>VGA cable would really do magic here.

Here's a very very useful DVI link on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi

Among other things it talks about DVI dual-mode...which is higher than 1600x1200.

BTW: I'm typing on a Dell 2407wfp lcd panel, connected via DVI from my laptop, @ 1920 x 1200...

I read that earlier today actually. According to the article, a single link is enough to support my resolution (1680x1050)... What laptop are you using? Not 8790?

Sorry, I run another vendor's laptop; the only reason I posted was because I thought the question was not-so-much laptop-dependent but more about DVI...

A Dell 9300.

I see. I lowered my resolution and it works now... I guess I'll await Sager's reply regarding why a DVI=>VGA adapter might help.

I think I got it... the DVI=>VGA adapter outputs the analog signal that is present on the DVI-I port... that's why it might work.

Got the adapter. It works. Now if I could shut this #$@$# laptop up. Ever since it came back it's been too loud.
