MR x800 dead or alive?

System: 9860 with MR x800

I was playing CS:Source, threw a flashbang, and game over... my screen turned into a disco of flashing multicolored horizontal bars.

Then the system bluescreened and rebooted. It has been doing the same since except when I turn off all hardware acceleration. Most of the time I get an infinite loop error. I tried installing the latest ATi drivers and DirectX but that did not fix it.

Even when I turn off hardware acceleration I get blinking multicolored horizontal bars:

Of course, nothing graphically intensive runs either.

It's less severe than chupa's ( http://www.notebookforums.com/thread153078.html ) so I am wondering if I can reflash the ATi BIOS before I throw in the towel.

I have this ATi flash utility ( http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...g/vidcard/34/9 ) but I need a fresh BIOS. My card uses version 192.055, can anyone share? Thoughts/suggestions? I have already started looking for an nVidia GeForce Go 6800 replacement but I would hate to trash my x800.

Thanks!

You could try re-seating it easily enough, and if that works then clean and apply new thermal compound.

Re-seating? I took the card out and applied thermal compound between the cooler and GPU. No change.

Someone at Sager said my inifite loop problem was caused by Windows so I reinstalled my OS but that did not work either, even after a disk format.

I incrementally increased hardware acceleration and noticed when DirectX comes on my system goes nuts and reboots.

I would like to flash the VBIOS but I need someone with a 9860 and functional x800 to save an image of their VBIOS using the ATI Winflash utility http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/281. Any takers?

The "Current VBIOS" http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...tiwinflash.gif would end in 192.055.

If that does not work my card will have to rest peacefully.

Take the GPU card out of its slot and re-install it, which I guess you already did. Assuming you're using the Sager drivers and aren't overclocking, then it looks to be a hardware problem. I can't help you myself as I have an nVidia card.

Starcub, nVidia sounds like the way to go

Thanks for the response anyway.

Still looking... anyone have a 9860 with functional x800 graphics card? Just takes a moment to save the card VBIOS from Windows.

Update on my situation:

I flashed my system BIOS with the newest version sent to me by Sager and still had the same problem.

Then I found a techpowerup.com VBIOS called ATI Mobility 9800 256 MB, which seems to be a slightly older version of the VBIOS for the x800 (same M28 designation, VBIOS original filename, and card ID just older time stamp, lower version number, and higher core clock).

I flashed my VBIOS with this older VBIOS but still had the same problem.

So I think the hardware is toast. I ordered a new nVidia GeForce Go 6800 from Sager and will report the results when I put it in.

Instructions for replacing the GPU aren't in the users manual so hopefully they will include them. One thing I can tell you is that you should wear a static wrist strap to avoid zapping your GPU module and/or mobo.

My new nVidia card arrived promptly from Sager. After it was installed my display and shutdown problems ceased.

Then I got a new problem. My display was not turning on after resuming from standby. I read something that said I should try opening and closing the notebook if this happens and that has apparently worked. Since then I have not had the blank display after resuming standby. I hope it stays this way.
