Fedora Core 5 install on external HDD

Thread Starter
I have a Fedora Core 5 DVD and I want to install it on my external HDD. However I think that there could be a problem as my Acer cannot boot from USB and I don't have a floopy drive either(in case I needed one). I can use USB 2.0 or SATA(through my SATA PCMCIA card) to connect the HDD. Would it be a problem to install FC5 in these circumstances?

This is a bit offtopic:
I also have Vista RC1, and I wanted to install this one as well...of course what I wrote above applies here as well(install on ext HDD and no usb boot). Could it be done?

if you can't boot usb then you're pretty much screwed as far as i know

Thought so...well, I can run it as a virtual machine

You have a cd-rom drive?

Only way I could think of getting it to work involves actually booting to a CD, and then that would load the linux on the HD for you. It is commonly done with Floppies for computers that need it in order to boot from external drives, I see no reason it couldnt be done with a CD.

But would I be then able to boot it next time, or will I have to use the CD?

You would always have to use the CD to boot to the HD, your BIOS is to limited to do this. You could concievably I suppose set up a tiny partition on your HD to serve this purpose, but that would kinda defeat the point of going external for many people I believe.

Is there a guide anywhere on how to do this?
Uh which, use a CD to boot to an external, or set up a tiny partition?

The first there might be(Though typically you see it for floppies, but between guides for that and live CDs it could be figured out I would imagine fairly easily if you are familiar with linux). The second one not so much, but again looking at the guides for the using a floppy for this purpose would give you a good starting point most likely.

I don't have a floopy drive though

I meant the one use a CD, but if you know a gude for the second option then I would be glad if you posted a link.

I dont know a link right off hand(Nor can I remember having seen one), in this case I would suggest google as your friend.

Even if you don't have a floppy the basic concepts are the same as using one, just need to be modified for the CD instead of the floppy. A good reading of guides on building live CDs and making boot floppies would be a good place to start if you cant find one specifically on building a CD for this purpose.

In as far as setting up the partition, again the basic concept would be the same as using a floppy, just modified for your HD instead, and adding in a bootloader step, however also as I mentioned, this kinda defeats the purpose for many people of using an external drive, so why not just use the HD in the first place in this case?
