I've used HP Compaq nc and nw line laptops and their build quality is good. You have to really look at the line, rather than a brand when trying to find something good quality. And quality isn't cheap...

I won't vote cause this is my first ever laptop, but this HP nc8430 is a really good build qaulity.

I have to get the dell, there is no other machine with that specs for the price.

The dell does not have the best support,or quality but for what i need with 3 years complete care...

Statistically (can't find the source now):

Apple
IBM/Lenovo
Asus

I say Alienware .. is not on the list. If you know alienware they build the best performance PC/Laptop with finest quality and a promise to last too long! 10 Years minimun, said by the Alienware user via interview, movie still viewable in alienware site i think.

PCGamer has got one old ALienware desktop and stated willing to anounce when it 'struggle'..

Well, you're kind of close!

If it's reliability you are talking about (and not build quality) then I suggest you look at some properly researced facts from PCWorld;

My order of quality: IBM>Dell Latitude>HP>ACER>ASUS. ASUS looks cool but the build quality is the worst of them all.

Asus?

I have heard they have one of the best!

I have to agree I used to like my Asus but its the biggest peice of junk I ever owned....I have an IBM and its built so solid, ten times better than the asus,...I just ordered my first AW notebook yesterday (m5500) so not sure about them....

That's opening a can of worms for the same reason voting for Dell is... or any of the main-stream laptops for that matter. Alienware doesn't build their own machines. Niether does Dell. Niether does Apple. Niether does HP/Compaq.

Dell latitude and Apple are largely made by the same company, Quanta.
Dell inspiron is made by Compal, most of the time

The reason I quote you is this: the Alienware machines that I have owned that were built by Clevo sucked. The one built by Uniwill was great. The m5500 that I just sold was great (not sure who makes that one).

This thread could very possibly be remade with actual ODMs instead of laptop brands. That would include:
Quanta
Compal
Asus
Acer (as far as I know)

I have been unable to find a top10 list more recent than 2002, so I won't put any up there that I don't know for sure are still in business.

Some people will just vote for the notebook they own... So it doesn't suprise me Dell is up there.

My asus has so fare taken 3 weeks of beaten at school, lets see can it stand a whole school year. Not 1 of my laptops that used for school, have yet stood a school year with out some sort of major problem.

The dells I own never last 2 fiddy. Gateways are ok, there not great. IBM's last forever, heck i still got a 3.5 inch monster that has windows 3.5. The days when windows couldnt over lap or be minamized.

And some people will just bash Dell no matter what. To be fair, I've never had an Asus, and they're one of my favorite brands because of their stellar motherboards. However, hundreds of thousands of people own Dell, and only the people who buy the cheap junky ones will complain. What Dell did you have that made you so sour?

I have seen the HP DV2000 but it is £900!!! And the Better spec Dell is £1000 but with Core2Duo.

The dell has better value for money, with 3 years complete care.

i have used both Dell and Asus, and Asus is alot higher quality.
