Presario R4000 screen is blank

Hello I'm new here and am going to jump right in. I am in no way a computer wizard but my kid has a Presario R4000 laptop and just today the screen went blank and we cannot get it to come back on. He said he had the computer on and just went to move the mouse and the screen blacked out.

Does anyone have any ideas of what could cause this or what the fix can be?

Thanks in advance, Dave.

Hey Big Dave, welcome!

You will probably need to provide more info, since this could be many things. Easiest would be that the screen saver kicked in and was putting the machine into Standby mode. So, I'll ask a few questions to see if anyone can help.

- What happens if you close the lid, and open it back up?
- Is the Power light on, if so is it steady or flashing ?
- what happens if you press the Power key?
- Try holding down the FN key and pressing the F4 key to see what happens.

Best of luck..

Ok, I've made a little progress. I have an external monitor hooked up and it is working so it is not the video processor. The screen kind of turns a lighter black when the computer is first turned on but I can't get anything else. I don't know but it might be a bad screen or a loose wire.

If you need any other information please ask.

Thanks, Dave.

It could be a damaged lcd cable (the wire that connects the lcd to the video card) or it could be that you are in the wrong screen output mode, pressing fn+f4 like AmigaDude said changes the mode (there are 3 modes: lcd only, external only, and both.) Try that and if it doesn't work check the bios settings. It could also be just a bad video driver.

Thanks for all of the help. I know it's not a video driver because we can hook up an external monitor and get that to work pressing the fn+f4 button. I think we are going to take it to a service store and have it looked at. I don't want to start digging around inside of it.

okay, there are four screws under the display. unscrew them and under your insert key, use a flat screw driver and lift up. as you do make sure the lcd is back all the way and take that panel off. make sure that the area under the button is clear. once done try it. ** you can do this while the computer is on**

Thanks for all of the help but the screen came back on the other day by itself and has worked fine since. I think it is a loose wire and if it happens again we are going to take it to a service center.

Have anyone heard back for Big Dave on how his laptop problem goes ?
I wondered if he knows what the problem is now. It appears I am having the same problem.

thanks

Hey, I happen to be an expert on this laptop. just email me at runcool@gmail.com
But, I'll be in IL all day on a business trip.
But, anyway you need to follow the instructions and take off the keyboard.
I could walk you around the issue and solve your issue at 6-7ish pm Central time.
follow those instructions http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00364919.pdf
anyway, it is really easy. there are four screws on the bottom under the LCD. bla bla bla. just follow the instructions. Hey, BUT FIRST HOOK IT UP TO ANOTHER MONITOR to make sure the video card works at all.
But likely the connection under the keyboard or behind the LCD came off.
**PS, if you are local and can prove that you are in college at full time. I do free work for college students within a 60 mile radius.**

does your computer beep at you??? There are really more steps than that. just remember to try hooking it up to a real monitor before ****ing with your LCD to make sure it isn't the video card on the notebook.

Ok, for those of you whom faced blank/dim LCD screen, here is one caused.
On my laptop it was caused by the malfunction LCD inverter. I just ordered the part from Ebay which only costed me total of around $40 Canadian.
Here is a link for taking apart the Compaq R3000/R4000 LCD screen:

I hope this can contribute to help ppl save money
I learned quite a bit about LCD screens after this experienced.

Enjoy all!

How did you figure it out? Compaq/HP guys are complete ASSBEEPS! Plus they don't know anything... **Well, the low guys don't**
I know one thing. when it comes to repairing stuff, I have had better luck with other brandnames than compaq/hp. They won't even give us a full service manual.

the coil in the inverters go bad and then causing the lcd bulb not to turn on. you can either change the coil or get a new VDU (inverter for you new-schoolers )

I think all of us that do have this issue should get together and sue compaq. :-D They make sure that it isn't documented at all on their website so they get extra profit when it goes out. I say a defect because I don't see this happening to other laptops. ;-) or it does and I never notice it.

as sad as it is, compaq/hp is not the only company that has problems with inverters. i see it every day at work monday-friday

V5000 no backlight and no help from H/P

I bought a brand new Presario V5000 from BestBuy who are really nice people. I took it with me to Venezuela only to find that the backlight just stopped working after about an hour. Well, you say...just take it down to the local H/P rep who is about ten minutes from the office for a taste of that wonderful WORLDWIDE H/P warranty service. To make a long story short I got shuffled from Venezuela to Mexico to India to Mexico finally to be told that the warranty doesn't cover equipment bought in another country. I asked for a copy of the warranty....no, they can't give that out....so I called BestBuy...they chuckled, apparently I'm not the first to believe that H/P would honor a warranty, and told me to bring it back, which I will do and get it fixed.

It's just a little fix H/P! Instead of delivering that stellar service your web page leaks all over the net you just get some moron reading a script, repeating the same thing over and over again with just a slight change in accent but with the same results.....no warranty service if you didn't buy the system in that country.

If it wasn't for the good offices of BestBuy and the information on the forum I'd still be in the dark.

H/P this is the last product I will purchase from such a deaf, dumb and blind insensitive arrogant organization.
