I have an m5550 I bought back in august, so it came with the Core "1" Duo cpu.

I've asked Alienware several times now, if they offer any kind of price break for us m5550 owners who missed the Core 2 Duo equipped machines. I've never gotten a straight or consistent answer.

You can buy your own 2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo from these guys for $342 US.

Then I suppose you could try to sell your original Core 1 Duo on EBAY, where I'm sure it will fetch a VERY low price, due to the fact it won't have any kind of warranty.

So, does anyone know if Alienware offers a reasonable exchange program? Like send your machine back, they make the CPU change and keep the old CPU, and then send it back to you? (all for a "reasonable" price)

I can not get a straight answer from Alienware customer service, or tech support.

I haven't seen or heard anything like that. But I must ask you, why would you change the processor now? I think the cost is not worth it right now, even if you are going up in clock speed. I guess it might be is you are going from 1.6 to 2.33 or something, but not for the same clock speed. Clock for clock, the C2D is not much better that the 1.

I am going to wait a while until C2D mobile prices come down a little before upgrading the processor. And when I do, I am going for the fastest processor available at the time.

That is probably what I will end up doing. I just wondered if there was a reasonably priced way I could do the swap now. For example, I would pay Alienware 200 bucks or so to swap out my 2.0 Core Duo, for a 2.0 Core 2 Duo.

I sure wouldnt buy one myself off the street right now for 350 or so. I guess Im going to have to wait a while too.

$200 for 8-10% performance increase. If that? You are crazy! LOL I would do it if it meant a clock speed increase.

I know 200 for a 2.0ghz Core Duo to a 2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo is stupid to most people, including myself. But I would do it, just because I am all pissed off that I ordered my m5550 about 3 weeks too early.

In any case, it appears alienware is not offering anything even remotely like this at the present time, so like u said, I guess I'll end up waiting a while and then try to score a cheaper Core 2 Duo 2.16 or 2.33 to replace my 2.0ghz Core 1.
