problem with E: drive, recovery.

hi, first post here.

maybe someone can help.
I have an acer aspire 1690.
my E: drive (cdrom dvd burner) didnt burn anymore. I figured it might be a driver problem, and coulndt find the driver anywhere on the net. since my windows and other progrmans didnt work the way they used to anymore, I decided to reinstall windows, with the recovery cd's.
tried to backup my files, but couldnt do that eighter, so I got me an external hdd, and made backups.
then I reinstalled widnows. now I had done this before, to get rid of a linspire install, and it worked perfectly.
but this time, windows doesnt work properly anymore. it hangs for a long time, after startup. nothing works, cant click icons etc. sometimes it helps to do ctrl-alt-del, then click away again. after this, it does work okay, and windows seems fine.

so, what do oyu think the problem is? is my d: drive broken? or is it a harddisk problem or a software problem? Im lost, and pretty frustrated by no, ppls heeeelp

Open command prompt and type this in
CHKDSK /r/f
Will fix any missing/corrupted windows files.

Ive tried that CHKDSK /r/f , fixed one file but the problem is still there.
I dont really see what defrag would do, Ive just installed windows, so... and before I did that, I defraged my ahrddisk, recently....

okay, Ive got a theory.
as I said, a while ago, I installed linspire on the E: partition. that allso installed a bot loader, on a seperate small partition.
linspire didnt work properly, so I formatted my E: drive.
but then I still had that bootloader. I reinstalled windows, but still that bootloader. so Im guessing it took a bit off the C: drive. I did manage to uninstall the boot loader after that, and it was all back to normal.
used my laptop for months, without real problems, but then the dvd/cdrom drive started giving problems. maybe its broken, I still dont know.
then I again reinstalled windows.

could it be that the way the partitions are now, is the cause of the problem with windows I have now? if yes, is there a way to make the partitions exactly the way they were before? should I contact acer to help me out?
