Toshiba P100-198 audio problems with Windows Vista RC1 and Windows XP

Hey Guys!
I've just downloaded Vista RC1 and everything installed just fine.
The only problem that I am having is with the audio driver. Vista recognizes it as a High Definition Audio Device and says that there is a problem starting the audio device.
I don't know what is going on.

My laptop uses a conexant cx20551 audio device, but seems that Vista does not supports it.

Even with Windows XP i am using an old version of this driver wich is 3.11.0.0 dated 29/12/2005 since i cannnot find any updated version of this driver. That is the version available at Toshiba website.

This is a very basic driver and does not give me any kind of sound acceleration, 3D Sound, EAX 1.0 whatsoever.

Please some help here!!!!

no, it is not Vista that cannot handle it, it is conexant that fails to deliver the correct hardware device description,
u can try to give them a call - u will not be the first one to make this complaint, i've done mine (compaint) on my hp using linux

P100 audio drivers

Hmm, surprises me that so many sat pro (p100) users are having this prob, but no-one else seems to have found the solution. Go to this page:

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...jsp?service=UK

Select your notebook model and look for the audio driver - from memory you may need to install with compatibility wizard, but you'll have audio from then on. You should find a few useful drivers there - don't worry about the chipset drivers or the fingerprint software..neither are compatible (read further for fingerprint drivers which DO work) Also the Zoom utility driver has issues. Hotkey and button drivers work fine - only had to reconfigure the Internet button which was by default opening the sys32 folder - one had ALL the button utilities, was able to redirect to Firefox.

Now, for the Bluetooth stack (not to be confused with the bluetooth manager - use the UK site's XP version - works fine) and Fingerprint software/drivers, look here:

http://www.csdsupport.toshiba.com/ta...es&model_id=10

They are being provided for the Portege, but same hardware in those cases.

Now all I'm waiting on is the OEM version of the graphics drivers - am currently using the latest build with a modified .ini file but suffering irregular blue screens due to one of the files (nvlddmkm.sys) - am wondering if Toshiba tweaks their OEM releases.

Thanks for the info man!
I've already installed the audio driver on both XP and Vista and what bothers me is that this driver is so simple! I mean for Vista it is ok since it is not a real vista driver but for XP we don't get any features like audio hardware acceleration, DS3D, EAX 1.0.. just plain audio. Not even an equalizer. I really ask myself if it is that dificult.
I've been looking over the net and lots of sites says that the conexant hd audio does support those features.
I think we have to wait a little longer for toshiba or conexant provides a decent driver.

Sound like what you are after may not even need to be covered by the driver itself, but possibly by a 3rd party application or add-on instead. Although the P100 has HD audio compatibility, from memory it is at an integrated configuration rather than via independent sound card. The same can be said for my PC (nForce3 motherboard) which uses an OEM 3rd party add-on to provide an EQ.

Try this one on for size - it may provide at least some of the functionality that you are seeking in the way of audio EQ

I just thought I'd share my experiences with this rubbish soundcard and/or drivers. What I can't understand is why a manufacturer would let their product be tarnished with such a seemingly low quality component, or release it with such low quality drivers.

I recently purchased my first notebook, a P100-188 and was really disappointed with the quality of the sounds, popping and crackling and low volume. I contacted Toshiba support and to cut a long story short I sent the notebook back for repair and week later received it back with the 3.11.0.51 drivers installed. They seemed to stop the popping and crackling ok, but the volume from the card was, if not the same worse than before, and some windows notification sounds just wouldn't play. As a result I ended up installing the 3.11.0.0 drivers again as I'd rather have crackling sounds than missing sounds, I've come to the conclusion that the conexant card or drivers are rubbish and I've now switched to using a Soundblaster Extigy USB card for sounds. This may not be a mobile solution, but it works for most of the time I use the notebook, and that is as a desktop replacement. I'm considering buying a PCMCIA Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS card as I could also use it on the move, if I can find one at the right price I certainly will.

If anyone else is thinking of installing an Extigy card you may have to disable all the background tasks by running msconfig, I had problems with the installation until I contacted Creative and was given some good advice, I suspect that Norton internet security background tasks were interfering with the installation, as they cannot be terminated from task manager.

This soundcard sucks big time. All i got with it was poor sound quality and crackling sound.
Although i am using now an SB Audigy 2 ZS Notebook it is far from perfect because if I set it to use my notebook speakers it does passthrough the conexant soundcard and the sound quality is quite not the same, but if i disable that feature and use the SB Audigy 2 ZS Notebook headphones the sound quality is awesome!
I can now have D3D Sound, EAX, etc..

So, my recomendation is to let this crappy soundcard and use some external audio solution.
