What anti virus programs work with Acer Aspire 5102WLMi?

I had difficulty getting my new Acer Aspire laptop to run and finally figured out out the problems were due to the anti virus programs. Acer sent along a trial version of Norton so I made the mistake of trying it thinking it might work till I got a better Security Suite. Norton locked up my laptop so mouse wouldn't work and keys wouldn't open any programs either. Furthermore to make it worse it blocked the restore mechanism on the hard drive as this wouldn't work till Norton was removed. I was able to format hard drive and restore to original setup using the backup disks Acer encouraged me to make when setting up the new computer. Next I tried the Security Suite from Charter.net since it was free too and used f-Prot virus protection. This program seemed unable to read the Acer utilities and generated several eror messages every time it booted up. I really liked their firewall program but they said it can't be installed as a stand alone. Next I tried AVG anti-virus since I didn't want to buy another secuirty suite that wouldn't allow my laptop to boot up right. AVG works fine but I need to add some firewall program and spyware besides Lavasoft Ad-Aware and wonder what other Acer users have found compatible with their machines? I use V-com on my desktop and might try that next even though the latest reviews didn't rate this software as high this year. I think I will try Counter Spy for spyware as that has usually rated high. What programs have you found that work and don't work with your Acer laptops?

I have slowly added programs in the order above plus all the suggested critical windows updates and it is still booting up and running so I am happy. I added MSWorks to get a Word Processing program, Firefox for a browser for everything other than Windows updates, Thunderbird for email and it still is working. I have tried some Linux Live CD's and found that Ubuntu and Mepis allow me to access financial websites so I will probably use that when traveling as I think that should be more secure. Kbuntu uses a different browser that banks wouldn't accept as secure enough. I liked the look of Kantonix but it wouldn't connect to the internet via my wi-fi network and Knoppix wouldn't even boot up for me.

What versions of Linux have other people liked on their Acer Laptops?

I'm having the same problems with my Acer Aspire 5102WLMi, unable to move the curser etc with the system freezing. This is using McAfee Internet Security Suite and Ad-aware.

I've since reinstalled the factory settings and don't have any virus protection at present, I'm trying to find the solution to this problem.

Does anyone know the answer to this problem? Many thanks if you can help.

A while ago my son had this situation with a Velocity Micro desktop. Norton and McAfee bogged down his system and conflicted with his Creative sound card. He finally settled on Trend Micro AV which works well, though it isn't free.

Never had any issues with spyware progams; we use Adaware, Spybot, and have tried Ewido and SpySweeper without problems except that their warnings can be a bit annoying.

After several trials and errors it seems that McAfee Internet Security was the problem.

I've now got Ad-aware, AVG Free virus scanner and Zone Alarms firewall; all is running smoothly now. Even with the teething problems I really do like this laptop.

I was also using the above programs successfully as noted in earlier post. But I switched to VCom 7 System Suite which includes a firewall and virus program since I run that on my desktop. So far my Acer 5102 seems to work fine with it. I still run Adaware PE to clean up tracking cookies. I had bad luck with the Norton program that came with it so it doesn't surprise me to learn that McAfee caused similar problems.

Anything related to Symantic and McAfee should be removed, I run AVG Pro AV, Webroot Spyware and my firewall is built into my router

avg pro is popular. musg be decent. i have a hardware firewall also. wanna hear something neat?

ive been running vista 32-bit for almost 3 weeks on the 5102, with NO ANTIVIRUS OR SPYWARE PROTECTION at all (keep in mind, i do use spywareblaster 3.51, spybot, and ad-aware pro - but NOT ANY active protection - those ar used in POUND of cure mode only)

so far, the machine is running great and fast and seems uninfected. my trial will last a month, then i will install kaspersky again. ill let u know if any viruses infect the machine in the next week, one week left

I agree with the consensus that Norton and McAfee are bloatware crap. I personally run AVG I.S. with AV, firewall and anti-spyware included in 1 package. a 3-computer license is $75 U.S., which I feel is very reasonable.
They also still have a free AV 7.5 which I used for years with great results. You may have to navigate around their website a bit to find it, as they'd rather you buy a version, but it's great of them to provide the freebie.
I think they, Kaspersky, Micro, Nod32, are all top-quality...and maybe Panda also.

And as Cybermind mentions, MS is incorporating an AV and spyware protection along with stronger firewall into Vista....which is one thing Norton and McAfee both whined about when beta versions were being released...
That and the fact that MS wouldn't release kernel code to them anymore.

man you are so spot on about kaspersky, nod32, and panda (some issues, but man, i WANT to love it, its actually very promising and has served me well in the past aside from some nasty uninstall issues relating to bluetooth etc)

all top notch, best of class. ill really have to check out AVG.. with your taste in software, u must be on to something.

as far as vista is concerned, im just really surprised. you know, with xp, if you are connected to dsl or what-have-you while you install.. often-times before you are done installing, you pc is infected with a virus etc. its just SO subsceptible. and vista? well im not quite sure yet, and to be honest i dont really wanna preach but i sure do wanna share what i find. so far so good, very impressed with the, um... "hardness" if you will, of vista. we'll see how it goes!

nice to hear from u again, till next time bro
