HARDDRIVE: 100GB 7200rpm - Seagate vs. Hitachi

Looking at Seagate Momentus 100GB 7200rpm - 5yr warranty ~$160 vs. Hitachi Travelstar 100GB 7200rpm - 3yr warranty ~$145.

I have the 60GB 7200rpm travelstar now. It's quiet and has been reliable for 2+yrs now. So I'm inclined to get the Hitachi 100GB. Is the Seagate at least as quiet and reliable? It's more available than the Hitachi right now anyway.

Thanks for input if you've had any direct experience with these drives.

wht are the model numbers?

another thing to make sure of is that it's a retail package, at least for the seagate, since the 5-year warranty is for retail kits and the OEM versions, i think have a shorter one.

as for reliability, they should both be about the same. i'm biased towards seagate. i havent really had too much to compare the noise levels to, as all the laptop drives i've had are seagates and the original in the 700m was a toshiba, so yeah...

You will get significantly higher performance with the seagate...check the charts below -- the two red bars represent the drives you are comparing.

yeah, but go look at the read speeds, price/performance ratio, and idle power consumption...

Yep and reading is usually more important than write speeds because it does that much more frequently when things are already on your HDD such as OS, apps, games etc.

yeah, on that article, i think you'll want to look at the link at th bottom of the page http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/sto...-hdd-7200.html

that has a comparison between the seagate and hitachi models. also, make sure you wath out for the difference between the SATA and PATA versions of each of the drives. though on most of the tests, the brands are similar to one another, it's still something to look at.

Hey, this is great! Thanks for the links and discussion. I agree that Seagate generally has the edge, price aside. Hitachi is lower power though. I ran the comparison between the Seagate and the new Hitachi 5400 160GB perpendicular. Still pretty close overall.

What was cool about the hardware charts is comparing my existing 60GB 7200Hitachi (the original one) drive with the 100GB Hitachi. Significant improvement. So I think I'll be pleased either way.

Its really strange that the Hitachi 7k100 Sata is signficantly faster than Hitachi 7k100 Pata and its the complete opposite for Seagate where the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB pata is significantly faster than Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB Sata. Talk about wierd...

I suppose its best if you have pata go with Seagate and if you have sata go with Hitachi.

I bought the 100GB Hitachi 72K PATA. It is noticebly faster than the earlier 60GB Hitachi 72K PATA it replaced and just as quiet. I'm very happy with it.
