Sentia owners - a bit of help needed setting up my 3450

Hey all, I have a few basic questions here, I have had laptops before but mostly what I consider toys (older slower) just something to use to surf the web or let my daughter play her barbie cdroms on, I never "worked" with them or installed productivity programs burned cds etc.

I bought this 3450 for that, to be my desktop semi replacement in a sense, probably about 40/60 use (40 sentia 60 main pc) basically I am installing most of my programs on it and want to use it as much as my main pc here.

All is going well except a few basic snags, some are windows related (im new to xp so don't laugh) and some are sentia specific questions and some are programs I use on both machines questions - looking for solutions.

First off I did a full review and pictures and started loading things onto it over the last 2 days, and so far great! This thing is FAST and I am loving it, does not have that laptoplag all the others I have used had so I see me using this alot actually - I am very happy with the machine here!

These are the things I need some help on, just things I need to learn how to work around because I am new to really "using" a laptop as a secondary main pc.

First off e-mail, I use outlook express, I know how to export and import addressbook and emails, I could mirror image the outlook on main pc on laptop easy, here is the snag - when im at laptop and check emails then go back to main pc and check emails I don't have the emails that I checked on laptop and vice versa, sometimes they are important or have details pics attached etc, I would like the inbox on both to be equal (is that possible?)

I was thinking of opening a gmail or something for more universal use (it would keep all contents no matter which machine I use) but is there some sorta trick or something to outlook that I could have it on both laptop and main pc and when I check email that when i go back to the other later it still comes into that box too?

It's a comcast email and I could just go thru the comcast page I guess but I hate that interface and actually like outlook express but hate that which machine is that email i needed on type stuff just never thought about that stuff is there a workaround or solution?

That email thing is my biggie issue, Besides having to create workgroups and share folders, I just dumped a gob of the files off pc onto laptop got plenty of room (100 gig) so no worries there, if I do need something big that I worked on one pc on and want it on the other I will just burn a dvd disc of it or something (seems complicated to do the sharing workgroup thing).

This is more of a question if anyone has used this, I am using avg antivirus (mainly cuz its free) any input good or bad about this program for protection and daily use? Hopefully it will do me good tho...

These questions are more specific to the sentia 3450 configuration, on the bottom right taskbar area I am not liking everything that is open here that I don't use, can someone walk me thru how to remove a few things?

Messenger, I hate that damn thing I never use it it always opens and starts with bootup, even when i unchecked start with windows, opens with outlook too yet haven't found in options how to turn that off either (all start with windows stuff is UNCHECKED) but it still starts with windows and outlook, I hate it and will never use it and dont want that dumb thing on here.

HotKey Setup, do I really need this icon on bottom right corner of taskbar? My hotkeys are setup but I don't see an option to remove that icon from taskbar.

I did remove the touchpad icon once I got it setup and know how to go into control panel if I want to mess with it, but that hotkey setup is here and I can't figure out how to remove the icon (don't want to do harm either tho) just dont want to see it everyday.

Motorola SM56 Modem Helper, again another icon thingy I wont ever use, yet it is there everytime I start this machine, I tried right clicking and looking for options, even left clicked opened read thru it all but didnt see anything about taking it off the taskbar, does this have anything to do with my wifi connection or anything - im taking it as a modem (regular phone) type thing, which I will never use anyways, how to remove this would be nice without doing damage to some program...

Other than that I am up and using this laptop and loving it, wish I had an 8 hour battery but hey I get about 3 hours out of it and that is using it hard and using a usb 3 fan cooler pad at all times so I can't complain too much.

I did finally get the fan to kick on yesterday, i was worried my fans didnt work in the 3450, it took me changing video resolutions to make the fan kick on for a second or two, beyond that dvd watching (on cooler pad granted) but making watching dvds, running photoshop email surfing web all at same time etc nothing has made the fans comeon so I was getting worried they weren't hooked up LOL

Thanks for what are probably some quirky basic questions, I won't lie I am not mr techy but am sure loving this laptop so I wanna learn to use it as a secondary complimenting pc in harmony with my main pc, I can load most everything on there and with a tweek or two and a few helpful answers to the above things I see this laptop converting me to a mobile user more and more, the keyboard is actually very well laid out too I LOVE the delete key in top right corner, perfect easy to hit spot when I wanna zap something hehe.

For your email issue, that is supposed to happen. I use Thunderbird as my email program, also using a Comcast account. And the same thing happens. You are downloading the messages, pretty much cut + paste, to your system to read. So they dont stay in the actual mailbox. I dunno if you can change that via the program, but it may be a setting on Comcast's site.

The AVG antivirus is nice, but not something to depend on for full protection. A quick scan here and there from it is nice though to keep basics out. I do suggest if you want more security go for a bigger company brand scanner.

To remove the taskbar icons you dont use in Windows XP, there is a feature to actually hide them built in. Right click on the tastbar and choose Properties. The first tab should be, "Taskbar". The last checkbox on that tab should read, "Hide inactive icons". Make sure thats checked. It will autohide the icons you dont use often. But you can always resee them with the new < arrow added to the end of the taskbar.

As for removing some of the icons completely. They are added at startup.

In your registery you can remove them, I dont recommend doing it without consulting the guide for each piece of software, but navigate in the registry to:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You should see a few things that include the word trayicon in them.
Some like:
BisonTrayIcon
igfxtray

You can delete their entries to remove them. As I said though, be sure to consult the creater of the software before doing so, removing the softwares registry settings could cause issues.

As for the Messanger, open it, and open the properties for it. In there you should find a setting for removing it from running in the background and/or tray. (I removed it already so I dunno the exact setting name or location.)

Re: e-mail and MSN Messenger...

FTLOSM,

I'm not sure this will work, but here goes.

If you're using a "pop" e-mail account, you can adjust how long your e-mail server keeps the e-mail on the server if the mail administrator hasn't disabled this ability from the e-mail server. When you do this, the e-mail will continue to be delivered to however many e-mail clients you have on however many different machines you use until this time limit has been consumed. Here are the instructions:

1) Since you're using Outlook Express, you need to go to "Tools" menu and select the "Accounts..." menu selection.
2) Once there, select the "Mail" tab.
3) Select your e-mail account and then click the "Properties" button.
4) Select the "Advanced" tab.
5) Look at the bottom section where it says "Delivery"
6) Click on the box where it says "Leave a copy of messages on server"
7) Now two other boxes will become selectable below.
8) Click on the "Remove from server after" box and choose an appropriate number of days you'll need to access both of your machines in order to download messages to both of them.

As the next box suggests, you don't have to delete your e-mail from the server after you delete it locally if choose not to do this. This is up to you.

If your e-mail server is capable, with the instructions above you'll be able to get your e-mail on both machines.

Here's a link that describes how to remove MSN Messenger:

1) http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=288

I used the second method in the above link. After doing this, I rebooted and then I went to it's location within the "Program Files" folder and deleted the folder that contained it.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Wicc and Nold, Thanks for the input seems to have fixed my messenger startup and so far that trick with the email server thing DOES seem to be working I sent myself 4 emails 2 from yahoo 2 from gmail, checked main pc all 4 came thru, normally after being read if i went to the laptop nothing, but waited about 30 mins tried laptop and bam all 4 came in there too!

I did the extension for 7 days just in case there was some overlap time between using one or the other and it may have bugs down the road but so far wow what a cool way to use outlook and retain the full future emails for reference and reply convenience...

Thanks again, lovin this 3450!
(still hate fedex)
