Very odd defect(?) on my new m1210

Ok, I will get a picture of this ASAP but for now... I noticed after looking it over that both sides of the front sides of my chassis seem like they are uneven. They are not flush and they are angled up. Is this normal?

More descriptive:
Just above the PCMCIA slot on the left side of the xps, where black meets silver, toward sthe front, the plastic looks as if it is popping off it is fine all along the side and then it slightly goes upward at at this point on my laptop.

Is that like this on everyones?!

Can anyone can take a picture of their PCMCIA slot so that it captures both black and silver at the front corner of the case so I can compare?

Also one more thing:
Take your battery off. I have a peice of masking tape holding down some sort of connector. Normal or not normal?

I am starting to think my dell is defective or improperly assembled.

Please help if you can. My AIM screen name if it helps is eyeamleet

Thanks folks. Pics of all this asap. I just need to clear out my flickr account of junk and then I will post them up there or something.

pics are now officially fully uploaded to my flickr account here:

a little blurry because they were close ups but it should be enough. You can download the full 6MP size shots from flickr as well

any input would be great at this point cause all google images that i can find do not look like mine. they are all perfectly flush. :-/

okay it does look like part of your upper chasis is proped up on the left side there, where the silver meets black. it shouldnt angle up like that. that does not look normal and mine is flush with the silver and black, as it is on the right side. call dell, definitely a defect.

as for the masking tape, that is normal and it is their cost effective way of holding down the would be bluetooth module. i dont have the module so all there is, is a connector being held down by the tape. if you ever decide to get that module that is where you would connect it.

hope that helped, good luck on the chasis defect

If your digicam has a closeup mode/aka macromode, try that. Then go to dell chat and show them the pictures you've uploaded.

Yeah, those are great pictures of the table, but we need to see the notebook. :P

Yep, the photos are lousy, but it appears the case is not assembled correctly. On mine the pieces are flush together. I'd ask for a replacement if it's new. Who knows what other part is broken (or will break prematurely) or stressed because of the sloppy assembly. I've noticed my old Chinese made 700M was better assembled than my Malaysian made M1210. The first indication for me was the intel/windows stickers, that look like they were stuck on by a preschool art class. I've been through 3 M1210's so far for various reasons.

I took some better pictures and did the dell connect thing. the guy was actually a great tech even though he was from India. So good he almost restores my faith in dell support (not quite though because he is one in a million) and he figured out that there is a screw there.

Now, this is what amazes me. He figured (correctly) that it was a screw underneath that had not been properly attached. To double check this he asked his supervisor and the supervisor told him to have me take the hard drive out and that there is a screw under it etc and to tighten it myself. I did it and also explained to him and his supervisor that I find it a little unacceptable that I spend a lot of money and that the machine isn't even built properly. The supervisor told me he would give me a rebate coupon. I basically told him that I would rather have the amount of this rebate taken off my account. I also explained that I want a new machine asap. The supervisor told me he would fill out the paper work and that the machine would be replaced and someone would call me within 48 hours.

I'm just not willing to take the risk on this thing. I mean basically maybe everything is assembled right but maybe it isn't and well ... I'm not comfortable thinking about that. Thus I am returning it.

Sorry for the piss poor quality of my last pictures. I have to figure out this new camera lol. Canon SD600 is new to me

Thanks to everyone for their help and I'm glad you all like my table lol

great. actually dell support center is in my city (bangalore, india). They hire engineering graduates mostly.

also (sorry for hijacking this thread), can we insert a SIM card into the m1210, i have one on order and would like to use GPRS on my lappy. 3G is not yet available in my country

I believe that slot you are thinking of under the battery is for a micro sd not a sim card

Yep. Chassis is "faulty." Or should I say the palmrest is not attached onto the base properly. Contact Dell & send them the pictures as well. They'll definitely work something out to your satisfaction.

There is a sim card slot under the battery, but it's not connected to anything if you didn't also purchase the broadband modem (i.e. you may just have a sim card slot and the broadband antenna, but not the modem unless purchased)

There is a case screw in that corner of the machine. You have to remove the four screws that hold the hard drive and slide out the hard drive. Check to see if the screw is tight if it is I would loosen it and try to pop the case together then tighten the screw again.

Actually the broadband antenna is part of the camera assembly (don't ask why, because even I don't know). So if you got an M1210 without the mobile broadband and the camera you won't have the antenna for mobile broadband present in your system. When you configure a 1210 with the broadband card it automatically warns you and adds the camera (the AV package) to the system. If you get just the camera you still get the antenna.

I had another problem. My burner decided it would be cool if it vibrated like a cheap sex toy every time i put a cd in. My screen is also having the flickering issue that I have read some people have. I called and really rippedinto the dell rep and his manager. They wanted me to send back this laptop and wait for it to be fixed which for me is impossible since I use it for business purposes. After an hour long debate/argument they are sending me a brand new unit with teh same configuration. They will not give me any discounts or compensation even after all the problems I have had with them and this laptop. Honestly if the new one is a peice of shit I will buy myself a Lenovo x60s instead of this XPS.

I can't even explain how pissed I am at Dell today.
