Sorry. I'm using photobucket.com at 800x600 pixels. Don't have the time during the week to change it.

Another update on the startup problem: It happened again! This time, Alienware had me download the BIOS 3.15 from support.alienware.com, burn it, and install. I'll have to wait until morning to see if the problem is fixed.

lol It was really funny talking with this guy. After I told him the problem he said, "Hmm. Weird." Then he put me on hold so he could research it. It's like nobody there has ever even heard of this kind of problem before. BTW, I got the technical language for it: The computer is not "posting" on cold starts.

I just decided: If this problem gets fixed without the notebook going back to alienware, I'm gonna post a dance.

Yay! I hope it works better than mine

Here's the latest. This morning, I had the same problem. Tech Support this time had me download and run a memory test from the microsoft website. We tested both memories independently. Both were fine. Then, he had me take out the optical drive, both hard drives, and the network card. We booted up again to make sure it would work. Now, I have to wait a couple hours, call back, and turn it on again to see if it happens again with all that stuff out. If it does, it's shipping time. If not, I don't know what'll happen.

POST-ing... Power-On Self Test..

Every motherboard does it first thing when it gets power. Unfortunately, that could be a million things. Could have been a technician gouginging the MB when assembling the box or a problem with the power supply on the MB or like I said, a million things... : (

Pulled the trigger on my m9700 yesterday... woot~!

Today has been crazy. Total since I got the machine: 6 guys at tech support who have no idea what is wrong with the system. Now I am so fed up with having to spend hours taking my computer apart that I am trying to get a replacement. Good thing, too, since I just spotted a DEAD PIXEL!!! I'm guessing these people gave me a refurbished or rebuilt machine out of old parts. That would explain the wear on the edges, as well. I really want to stick with Alienware because they are very powerful and because of what I have heard on these forums, but if Alienware doesn't give me a new machine, I'm probably going to try to get my money back and start looking for an alternative. I just don't have the time for this.

Tech support is tried to convince me to send it in for a check-up so they can replace whatever part is the problem, but I hung up with them when my dad called. He's now running interference for me. Now, having seen this dead pixel, I am set to absolutely refuse to just send it in for maintenance.

Sorry to be stabbing my own review to death. Please pray this all goes well.

Not to add insult to injury, but I beleive their dead pixel policy lies only with the 5th quadrant (center) of the screen.

1|2|3
------
4|5|6
------
7|8|9

I have to say I will most definately be inspecting my machine thoroughly when I get it for usage and wear... Whoa...

They had better fix this! It is in quadrant 7. This nightmare is going from bad to worse to downright pathetic. I'm sending it to the repair people in Houston today. Absolutely no replacing the whole computer and a 15% restocking fee if you want to return. 10% of 2700 is 270 plus 5% is $405 total loss if I return this.

Hmmm I don't know what to do guy. That's a bummer and a bit unerving to me. Especially since hearing that someone a friend of mine knows thinks AW computers are junk... Not that I give his friend any credibility. I don't know him or his tech experience level.

I hope having a dead pixel on a laptop is very very rare. I'm really sorry bud...

"If the LCD display unit is determined to be defective according to Alienware’s policy, please contact our Technical Support department. Our technicians will verify the damage and arrange for the repair or replacement of the LCD display unit. Turnaround time of the repair will depend on the LCD display unit availability. This policy is valid for the duration of your system warranty."

You might want to see if there are any 'lemon' laws in your state...

I hope it doesn't come to that. I know I said no sending it in for maintenance, but that is what I did. It goes out on FedEx 2nd Day tomorrow. The three issues were the cold boot, the dead pixel, and the subwoofer rattle. I included a letter, a copy of which I sent to the president of Alienware.

I'll keep updating as the situation changes.

So did they say they would replace the screen if in fact there is a dead pixel?

Didn't ask. At this point, the ball's in their court. They'll either completely replace my computer, fix all the problems, fix one or two of the problems, or send it back and say there isn't anything wrong with it. I don't want to think about my next move if they do either of those last two options.

I find it hard to believe AW would resell a refurbished PC as new

I hope it all gets fixed, too. Still no response from Alienware on the letter, so I'm hoping they're hard at work getting it to perfect working order. We'll see. I'll probably be off the forums to focus more on school until I get some kind of response from Alienware. Will post.

Good luck to you!

Alienware called me today. The guy said all the issues I mentioned would be fixed and he would personally stay on task until I was 100% satisfied with my computer. What is even more encouraging is that the guy gave me a direct line of communication with him and told me he would keep me posted on the progress of the fixes. He also said he has worked closely for years with the person who will actually be working on my computer.

This has been my best experience with Alienware since I placed my order. Now, it's just a wait-and-see on whether they actually follow through.

lol, man. The backpack shipped to me in a separate box from the computer and necessaries.

Here's an update on my situation: I asked for a call from that cs guy earlier. He got back to me promptly. The LCD screen has been replaced. Another part has been replaced also, but the guy didn't know which part it was (he said he'd find out and lmk). The system should be finished (and shipping back to me) tomorrow or friday.

holding my breath...
