M1710 RAID and second hard drive

Hi , I am into buying one of these babies , but now i am a bit confused because
a guy on ebay told me that it is possible to put 2 hard drives into the M1710 configured as a RAID .

Can someone confirm this?

Kind regards

Not really true.

As configured from Dell, it is one HDD only. Additionally, the chipset does not have the right support for hardware raid. Now, you can add a second drive, by replacing your CD and putting in a second HDD (through the use of a caddy that fits it). You still can't do hardware raid however...

Thanks Divine,

This is what i was thinking ....
So I will not send money to that guy , it must be a faked M1710 on Ebay
A good thing he was lying about the disk else i would have sent him the money and probably get nothing in return.....

Cheers

but i think with that caddy in there, you can still do raid... software raid, but that will probably be slower than a normal drive... still not worth it anyway

Can you setup the second drive as an OS and boot from wich ever drive you want.

Just curious. I bought a caddy and was wondering if I could boot from it.

trying to do raid on an M1710 as stated about is about worthless but it can be done with software. The guy telling you that you can do raid setup I would be sceptical of as a seller, it sounds like he is telling you waht you want to hear to make a sale

Yes; it works just like a desktop system. But i am not sure why you would - most of the time, you will want the CD in rather than the HDD, so making the caddy-based drive your primary makes no sense.

I have Vista on the Caddy drive, and was wondering If I could switch between Vista on the Caddy and Load Xp from the internal hardrive. I also have a USB enclosure for my DVD drive.

Thanks for the info I will give it a try.

Cheers
