Hard Disk Performance Comparison

Guys,

Can we see what people are getting as an Avg Benmark for their harddisk index on SiS Sandra. It's free and you can download from http://download.com.com/3000-2086-10018691.html

If you could run the File System Benchmark and see what you get.

My 40GB disk is bringing up an index of 10Mb/s (actually it's nearer 9Mb/s)
(P2.8, 512Mb PC3200, 40Gb, Raddy 9600 Pro, XP Pro, 15.4)
I would appreciate if you could put your results up here if you have time to do so. I am trying to convince AW that I have a problem with my Lappy and need some evidence really. Your help will be appreciated!!!!!!

Also it will be interesting to see the differences in performance between machine specs.

Thanks.

Hi Dynax.

As you know, we both are having a hard time with our laptops.

I don't know which info from the Sanrda report you're talking about, so here it is:

Drive Index 14393kB/s
Benchmark Breakdown:
Buffered Read 728 MB/s
Sequential Read 24 MB/s
Random Read 2820 kB/s
Buffered Write 1028 MB/s
Random Write 986 kB/s
Average Access Time 20 ms (estimated)

These numbers are from a clean, fresh install with only drivers, COD, and 2 benchmarking programs installed. (It doesn't run too bad this way, but it also has no AV or firewall protection... ugh.)

What is your 10 Mb/s refering to??

Hope this helps! Thanks!

Its the overall performance average for the disk. Bit like a 3d Mark index where it gives a figure after doing all sorts of tests.

I've found a way to sort out the latency issue. On you master CD there is a program utlity in the Alien Adrenaline folder. Its a shareware app for tweaking things. Dunno how good it is to be honest but I reduced the latency on the Raddy and the EIDE controller. I think there is a bit of improvement but not enough to say its a fix.

AW have not got back to me yet!

and um what is it called for those of us that did not have alien adrenaline on our master cd's? (Even though I bought it!

benchmark breakdown
buffer read 91 mb/s
sequential read 29 mb/s
random read 6 mb/s

Homer is yours a 40GB disk. Can you state what you used for this test and also the spec on your system. It looks like your index is in the region of avg 14.3Mb/s.

i´ve got the 60GB disk. split up to 12/5/40
i got 29MB/sec.

It's the 60 Gig 7200rpm... looks pretty bad compared to bob505! Wow. Does this mean that the HDD is messed up, or the motherboard is messed up? (Sorry, I don't even know where to find the overall "index" number. That's why I put all my numbers up.)

Thanks! I think this really shows there is a problem (and specifically what the problem is, maybe.?)

Hey there sneezinglion.

I don't think anyone that paid for it got it on disk. You have to call in for it. They will e.mail it to you.

Hey there DyNax. I see how to adjust the latency for the "display controller". But how bout the video card (that is the Raddy, right?). I see the overclocking funcitons, is this it? How much did you move these by? Would it be too different if I have the 60gig drive & nvidia 5600 card?

Thanks for the generous help to the noob (myself).

p.s. Let me know (post it) when the AW Oracle gets back to you about your Sandra report!! Thanks Again!

OK I think I got confused....he said that he found another utility in the adrenaline folder on his master cd.....I was wondering what that utility was called.

Homer,

This is the status so far.

"Hi,

Your report has been forwarded on to a senior notebook engineer and we
are awaiting feedback from them before we can take further action. I
should have an answer for you by Monday afternoon.

Regards,

Alienware(r) Ltd. UK Technical Support Team"

So Monday afternoon should be internesting.

The latency issue:

I basically left the video at 248 and reduced everything else down to 8 and the IDE Controller to 64. We could talk about the benefits and pitfalls of latency for ages so I wont go into it. I have improved my performance by tweaking these settings but the peformance is still not upto scratch. The other thing which is weird is the AGP apeture is set to 64MB. I have read that you should have this set to half your total ram installed. Dunno how true this is.

More later!
