Upgrade D620 Processor to Core 2 Duo

Thread Starter
I have a fairly new Dell Latitude D620 with a T2600 @ 2.16 Ghz Core Duo,

My question is.........

How can I get the new Core 2 Duo Processor in this machine?
Can I buy the processor from Dell and pay for them to install it?

Anybody out there can help?

Thanks in Advance!
Sincerely
Dan

Yes, you can upgrade the D620 from Code Duo to Core 2 Duo. The CPUs have the same socket. We have swapped out the T2400 CD CPU for the T5600 C2D CPU.

I just upgraded a D620 from a T2400 to a T7200 and when I run CPU-Z, it shows the CPU is at 1.3GHz.  I upgraded to XP SP2 to see if that would correct the problem and it did not.  I have the A10 BIOS and I don't care about the heat.

Any help is appreciated.

Try disabling Intel Speed Step in the Bios. It is probably dropping the CPU frequency/voltage.

I tried to disable speedstep and the Dell BIOS indicates the machine will run at the lowest possible setting when it is disabled.  I am going to try it to see what results I receive.

Thank you for the suggestion.  Other suggestions are welcome.

I just tested disabling speedstep in the BIOS and as advertised, Dell locks it to the slowest speed, 1GHz.  I am going to reboot with speedstep enabled.

What is the date and size of your intelppm.sys file?  When I installed the new processor, System Manager did not recognize the processor and I had to find an updated intelppm.sys file.  Mine is 4/13/2008 with a file size of 36,352.  Could this be the problem?  I am considering booting it from a linux live distro do see if it does the same thing under linux.  Could this be a windows issue?

Problem solved.  I had to scrape all of the old heat sink compound off of the heat sync and applied new compound on the entire surface area.  This corrected the problem and now the CPU runs at 2.0 GHZ as reported by CPU-Z.

Thanks for the help.  I did a youtube video on how to remove the heat sink and will post the link when post production is complete.

The T7200 works great on the D620.  I look forward to upgrading to a T7600 in the future when they cost a little less.

Based on the dust caked onto the heat sink in this computer, I have some cleaning to do on my other D620!
