Problem with Firewire on xps m1710

Hi Again!

Today I got the reply from Dell about my firewire soundcard problems with my m1710. This is actually my 2nd this year which i got in replacement for my other very faulty unit.

The problem is that when using my really really good firewire card(Terratec Aureon Firewire 7.1) There is kinda white noise with old modem sounds comming out of my speakers. The music and sounds come out to, but the white noise is very low and sounds like interference

With my previous XPS M1710 I had a tech comming out to change the motherboard, and after a lot of testing we tried the power adaptor that came with my 9400(a 90w).

The problem went away, but I got the error msg in windows saying that this unit needs to use a 130w power adaptor.

So since the last unit had a faulty lcd and a lot of issues I got this one, but I still have the same problem with the firewire port.

So Dell XPS Support told me that the unit is produced like this and that there was nothing they could do, I was asking if there was a possibility to get a replacement or upgrade when the new santa rosa comes out(hopefully there is a new MB that doesnt have the problem), and they said there was a chance for that.

So here I am waiting for a new line of MBs to get my XPS working with my firewire soundcard that worked flawlessly with a 9400. Strange stuff!

I dont know what to do with this issue, I was hoping to bring the laptop to use it live when I am having my gigs, to use my vst synhts and stuff, but I have to put that on the shelves for a while.

Since the unit is made this way I guess there is nothing more to do than wait...

The M1710 doesn't use the Texas Instruments Firewire chip. Allot of firewire devices have problems with any other chip than the TI.

Does Terratec mention anything about a required Firewire chipset?

Terrate doesnt say anything about that only firewire/ilink. Does the 9400 have the Texas Instruments Firewire Chip?

I was very dissapointed to find out my interface (Presonus Firebox) doesn't work with my M1710. It's the main reason I bought it. I've posted on multiple official forums and nobody can seem to help me. I even bought an express card Firewire adapter. It didn't help. I found this and apparently there's supposed to be a BIOS update that fixes it. But I'm not sure. Here's the link.

We'll see. I hope everything works out. It was hard because I bought an M1710 when it first came out so there was basically nobody else out there using it with an audio interface. It's good that more people are popping up. Maybe we'll get the support we deserve.

I installed on friday the newest bios update there was here in Norway the A01, but that didnt help at all!! Actually I think it got kinda worse...

You see before there wouldnt be any noise from the soundcard when on batteries, but now there is noise all the time!

I really really like my xps m1710, but I am a pro musician and I really really want to use it for what I planned to use it for, Live on stage and in my studio!

I hope there will be a major firewire update on the next MB and I hope they can fix it soon!

-BTW really glad that others also use the XPS M1710 for music production!

Advice from another music buff... Get the D/Dock. It gives you a PCI slot to work with allowing you to use the real good stuff. You can get a D/Dock off ebay for $100. Then throw in your favorite sound card (in my case X-Fi) and go! Best part is when you undock the system automatically knows how to change sound devices from internal to external with NO issues! I am impressed!

I am getting ready to get the X-Fi pro breakout box to get my inputs back that I lost when I sold my Audigy Platinum tower. That should be nice.

I must say I have been into that thought of getting a D/Dock, but I have been a audigy user for many years, with different cards. I never quite was satisfied with the latency for recording midi or anything...

Then I bought the Terratec Card and WOW and BOOM! Its the best sounding card I ever had. So I am really a bit down since the XPS M1710 is having problem with the firewire card.

If I were to try another card I guess it would be the M-Audio stuff or something. But, the terratec is 6ms latency standard and with no issues.. Can be down to 2m s aswell. I did try on a 9400 and it actually worked! 2MS!!

Hope there is a solution soon to the problem with the firewire!!

Was you express card Firewire adapter the TI chipset? If not you weren't any further ahead.

I have the Mackie Onyx system and it will not work properly on anything but the TI chipset. I imagine it the same for the Presonus.

Today I got a call back from XPS Support and I asked them to send the info about the firewire audio soundcard issue to the techs "upstairs" and XPS Support said that they would also pass the info to the designers of the XPS M1710.

They are calling me on friday aswell to check up on the matter and will give me some info if it is possible to get a feedback from the techs "upstairs" and the designers of the 1710.

Hopefully this will have them to think about the problem when the next MB comes out with the Santa Rosa platform. I guess there will be a new MB with that.

I will keep you guys updated!
