Here's the deal I can get a 9400 Canada or e1705 US

9400 specs
t7400
2gb ddr ram - no specified speed
7900gs
intel wireless
120gb hd 5400rpm
backpack
80whr battery
2 year warranty

for 2200CND delivered directly to my house

or

e1705 specs
t7200
1gb ddr2 667mhz ram
7900gs
80gb7200rpm
no backpack
80whr batery
2 year warranty

for 1900CND but It'll be delievered to boston in which my bro will pick in first week when he visits friends.

Prices are all with taxes in. and then converted to CND currency.

does the ddr ram have that much affect? how about the 80 7200rpm vs 120 5400 rpm?

300$ CND price difference....not sure what to do! or which one is a better deal!

your advice is appreciated. I'm mainly concerned about the RAM speeds..

Thanks.

keep the t7200, get cheapest possible ram and get a 6 cell battery.

You can upgrade the ram later because dell rips you off and you can get a much better brand yourself.

You can buy a 9 cell battery for the same price as it takes to upgrade from a 6 cell to a 9 cell.

Processor upgrade is a waste because its not that big of a difference in speed (no increase for gaming) and you would be better off spending that money on something else.

$300 sounds like not a bad deal for an extra gig ram, larger HD, faster CPU and a backpack, delivered right to your door, no extra modding/buying/upgrading required. I'd guess you'd pay the same if you were to do all the upgrades yourself.

Ram speed shouldn't make much of a difference. The HD will make a bit of a difference, but it's your tradeoff whether you want speed or size... no one can recommend one way or the other.

It all depends if you're the type of person who likes to scour the internet for all kinds of parts and pieces, or if you just like to have a compelte system as is.

I'd take the 9400.

Go for the 9400. The RAM speed will make no difference in the 9400 because the FSB is 667MHz, therefore even if you get 2x1GB @533, since they will function in Dual Channel mode the effective speed will be 1066, much higher then the FSB@667. Oh and the 9400 uses DDR2 RAM, not just DDR. Also a 80GB@7200RPM will only be slightly faster than a 120GB@5400RPM because the data density is 50% higher in the 120GB meaning less distance for the heads to travel, for seqeuntial access anyway. The 120GB may even edge the 80GB out for avg access time.

Reaver's explanation helps me to understand why there are 4-8 5400 hard drives that beat out some 7200s. There's a great performance chart @:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html I wish notebook makers would provide make and model of HD's with every system.
