Bios update for Z96Js

Thread Starter
Hi, I was just interested in knowing the BIOS update procedure for the Z96Js, as I have a merom and am gettin the ucode error message. In the BIOS, it says the BIOS type is Z96JS, and the version is 703. I would assume that the one I'm going to be updating to is the version 901 from the Asus site? I bought my barebones from mWave, if that helps.

From what I gather, I need to make a bootable CD, and I was going to make one using the Ultimate Boot CD from ultimatebootcd.com. From what I understand after that, I need to make another cd with aflash2.exe off my Asus drivers cd, and the downloaded driver off the asus site. Is this correct?

Thank you,
Pip

You'll need to install Yonah CPU first before you can even boot to your CD, without Yonah you won't be able to bypass "ucode" error message even by press "F1".

I've already made a bootable CD with BIOS version 0901:

1: Download NERO image files: http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/images/N...0901-Merom.nrg
2: Use Nero to burn the image file to the CD
3: Insert CD and when first power on the laptop press "ESC" at Intel logo screen
4: Select Optical drive at boot options screen
5: at "A:\" prompt type "Update" and press "Enter".
6: it'll automatically update the BIOS and don't turn off or reset the computer during BIOS flash.
7: screen will go back to "A:\" prompt when finish
8: restart the computer and then hold F2 to enter BIOS, press F10 to save and exit BIOS.
9:Boot to Windows, it'll start to find all kinds of new hardwares.

The link gives me a 404 message, and I'm actually able to boot to a CD using my merom, dunno why.

That'll work for the Z96JS? It's listed as the S96J bios.

Before I do it, just to check, can I leave my battery in, or do I need to take it out and only use the power adapter?

Thanks,

Just use the AC adapter.

Not to be a spaz, but what would happen if I had the battery in?

If you are going to flash BIOS with AC plug in then it doesn't matter whether you have battery installed or not.

No blue screen for me. I've been using standby a lot the last few days too, on the new BIOS (go Ken! ). Is there some software suite you are installing on both this and your old barebone model?

So I need to run the bios update with the Yonah processor? Is there any way to get around this? I really don't want to have to deal with buying a processor, intalling it, flashing the BIOS then returning the processor.

Thanks

Unfortunately yes, you do need to install Yonah first in order to flash the BIOS if you plan to use Merom in this notebook.
