Which hardware is faulty? help me.

I'm doing my best to make this short:

Compaq Presario B3804, Centrino 1.6G, 512RAM, ATI9700

1 month ago, if game was running, fan boosted to max and won't slow down.
SYSTEM process's 100%CPU. windows can't cut off power automatically. without playing game, or standby computer and wake it, everything's good, normal shut off...

Then, Harddrive formatted, windows reinstalled, drivers updated, Ram upgraded, then Raw windows, Raw drivers from Compaq, ... problem remains.

harddisk replaced(from toshiba 40G to samsung 40G), this time it's getting worse, CPU's 100% all the time(SYSTEM, in task manager, sometimes SVHOST). process explorer shows DPC around 50% and hardware interrupt about 30%. Even nothing is installed (Raw windows).

No problem about network, harddisk and Ram. no problem about software, they worked very well 1 month ago. It seems only motherboard, graphic card or CPU could have problems. No www threads helped. Any master could help me identify the problem? Thankssssssssssssss.

would u give us a bit more info, just a teeny teeny bit more?
. what games? even solitaire did this to ur system?
. what type of hard drive speed did u replace? 4200/5400/7200 rpm?
. what ram upgrade r we talking about? just more ram, same type? or complete new ram modules (what type)?
. what r ur normal startup apps/services?
. u have an ati9700, have u tried the mobility version direct from ati?
. u stated that windows counldn't cut off automatically when system was at 100% - what did u do, just unplug?
. ur system went into100% when u r playing game, what happened when u get out of the game? or could u not get out?
. evrything was ok a month ago , could u remember the circumstance of the switchover to the darkside of ur system performance?

cheers ...

Re: futher help

Sorry for a very late reply, cos it seems to be normal now.

I still want to find out the source of darkside, Thank you for your help.

Here's the additional information as you required:

Game: not necessarily games. Not solitaire level, very hard to define. any bigger ones could trigger the problem like whatever 3D games ,even disk defrag (CPU: SYSTEM(DPC) high), windows update - from website.(SVCHOST high). not auto update, auto update is fine.

HardDrive: old: Toshiba 40G probably 4200 or 5400 rmp. New: Samsung 40G 5400rmp. problem raised BEFORE I replace the harddrive and remains with the new one.

RAM: old: 256M DDR. New: just added a same one. total 512 now. (Problem occured BEFORE I upgrade the RAM)

STARTUP apps/service: Only Windows Raw process/service, no change made, not a single third party software. Problem remains.

ATI9700: I tired HP/Compaq ver, ATI ver, Third party ver like OMEGA, no difference at all.

Cut off: I manually shut off (Hold power button for seconds). Then I found I could stand by the computer, it works. everything's shut off because it's laptop. then wake up, everything's fine now, shut off then normally.

Get out of Game: everything's normal. normal closing game.

Circumstances: I could hardly remember any obvious symptons. One thing is I poured some soup like stuff on keyboard 3 months ago. could anything of mother board damaged? but it's quite long time before problem raised.
Another thing is I always keep my computer running with downloading something sometimes for a week long.

Now the situation is I shut off the computer and cooled down it totally. Surprisingly after that it's running perfectly now. I didn't try any game now. I just dare not.

ur problem came and went away - cool, u r one of the lucky ones

i can only suggest that u run a memtest, do a clean install of ur gpu driver &
if u r brave enough then take the system apart and perform a clean-up inside with new thermal paste.
or just vacuum around the vents, don't vacuum ur keyboard, u might lose a few keys if the suction is too high

do u keep at least 15-20% free on ur hard drive? defrag it once in a while helps also

when leaving ur laptop in use for any long period of time (with no attendance), try to keep it well ventilated, it needs airflow UNDERNEATH to cool itself off

cheers ...

Thank you qhn.

Until now nothing has gone wrong again and I'm quite sure no problem of software/drivers/harddrive space.

Your advice of ventilated environment and vacuum would be very helpful, coz my laptop's really in a dirty circumstance. also guys on my another thread http://www.notebookforums.com/thread174592.html helps a lot on this thing. I'm on my way deep cleaning her.

Thank you for all of you. This forum's really good one.
