Vista RC1 Questions

Thread Starter
Just installed Vista RC1 today and have been fooling around with it all day today. Whenever I open up Photoshop it takes a big chunk out of my memory. That would never happen in Beta 2. I had the public Beta 2 and pre-RC1 Beta 2 and nether one of them did that.

The same thing happens with Windows Explorer too. Not on my C-drive, but my other hard drive. I have lots of files on my second HD and whenever i go into the HD, explorer takes a big chunk out of my memory and my CPU. Almost a 100% of my CPU. When I open up a folder in that 2nd HD, say the music folder which has a lot of files in it, the green bar at the top is very slow and takes forever to load. I can press the stop, little red X at the end and it will stop and cpu gets better, but that's the only way. BTW, it's a SATA HD, but so is my C-drive too. The memory chunk will also happen IE too. Here's a screenshot of my task manger:

And here's my PC's spec:

Dell Dimension 5100
  • Dell 20" 2007WFP Wide-Screen Black Flat Panel Monitor
  • Microsoft® Windows® Vista RC1
  • Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 531 w/HT Technology (3GHz,800FSB)
  • 2.8GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x1G, 1X256M, 1X512M)
  • 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
  • 512MB GeForce 6600
  • 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
  • Sound Blaster® Live! 24-bit ADVANCED HD™ Audio
  • diNovo Media Desktop
  • Logitech Z4 speakers
I have a rating of 4.0 in Vista too.

I also have a question about my notebook too. I have a Dell XPS M1210 notebook. Specs are:
  • Intel Core Duo Processor T2300E (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
  • 12 inch Wide-screen WXGA Display with TrueLife
  • 1GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
  • 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 TurboCache
  • 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
  • 24X Combo CD-RW/DVD
  • Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy
  • Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
  • 53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
  • Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)
  • Windows Vista Capable
Well I installed RC1 on it today too. And it runs very slow. I noticed in the task manger that "dwm" (desktop windows manger) is taking up a large memory chunk. I can disable Aero and it will run much faster. Anyone else's RC1 running slow?

Also does anyone know where I can get some drivers for my Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy for my notebook?

Yes, same problem here. NVidia Quadro NVS 120 M (also known as Geforce Go 7400) in a Latitude D820. Intel Core Duo T2500 (2.0 GHz/667 MHz FSB), 1 GB DDR2-RAM, 667 MHZ, 1 DIMM. I have also seen that dwm eats much RAM. I filed a bug about this. Are you in technical beta for Vista, Claye? I would send you the bug ID so that you could vote and validate. For me, RC1 is slow when I start Flip3D. I bugged this, too. Regards, Benedikt

What exactly is the technical beta?

Here's a screenshot of my Task Manger on my Desktop running RC1 and my notebook running RC1:

Notice Photoshop at the very top of each one. It kills my desktop's RAM! I'm running 2.8 gigs. But Photoshop won't take as much on my notebook for some reason.

Technical beta means that you are official beta tester with access to interim releases, such as Pre-RC1, Post-RC1, etc.

Even if you are not in technical beta you are able to download "Microsoft Beta Client". There should be a link on your desktop. File a bug about DWM.exe taking much RAM and send that to Microsoft, please.

Furthermore, what's your display resolution? And what video card are you using in your desktop pc?

Edit:

http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/vis...&build=0&sku=0 This is a link to a tutorial how to file bugs for Vista...

No, I'm not an official Beta tester. I got on when they released the public version of Beta 2. I've ran Beta 2, Pre-RC1, and now RC1 and have been using the same key as I started with in Beta 2.

But on my desktop I'm running the Dell 20" widescreen and it has a 1680 X 1050 resolution hooked up through a DVI cable.

Okay, even if you are not an official Beta tester, you should bug it. Tell them that dwm.exe eats much RAM. Tell them about Photoshop. Tell them about everything. If you do, you help to make Vista even better.

I sent them some info on the problems I'm having. Thanks for the help.

I'm re-installing XP on my notebook. I hate to, but I've got to. The notebook is used for school. I'm leaving Vista on my desktop though. It runs fast on here, just have those problems with Photoshop, explorer, etc..

One more question man. What defrag do you use? I really think that's a big part of my problem with explorer. Cause it only does it when I try to access my 2nd hard drive. The Vista defragger doesn't show if it defrags my other hard drive or not. I used a version of Diskeeper to defrag with Vista Beta 2 and worked great, but it won't work on RC1 for some reason. Do you know of any other brand of defragger?

Claye: Vista 5728 is out for public, would you mind to test it again and tell me if there are still performance lags for Flip3D/Aero?
You can tell Photoshop how much RAM to use in the Preferences inside Photoshop.

You have a link to it? What is it, RC 2? Edit: Nevermind I found it. Thanks. I'm downloading now and will let you know something.

Okay, let me know how it goes for you. It's a Post-RC1-build from the RTM-branch.

Yeah, I read where it was kinda an upgrade to RC1.

I think my problem with my desktop is AVI files. I have a few in some folders on my 2nd hard drive. Exlporer seems to take a massive amount outta my CPU and RAM when I try to access those files. There's one file in there that I can't delete for crap. It's big too, about 1.6gigs or more. Explorer will act up and close before it deletes it. I even tried booting through safe mode and it does the same thing.

Oh btw, what do use to burn ISO files in Vista?

Ok Benny, I finally got Build 5728 up and running. I didn't do a clean install, just an update. It took forever too! I even took a nap while it installed. lol

It seems to run a lot better than RC1. Much much better. I re-installed XP on my notebook, but that was before you told me about this build. I have it running on my desktop. But, Aero and 3D Flip work just fine. No lags at all. Plus the problems I had with Windows Explorer taking up so much RAM and CPU is all gone. The new Aero mouse cursors are in this version too. Not sure if they were in other versions or not. I found them elsewhere and installed them myself in Vista Beta 2. No, not a big find I know. I haven't had that much time to play around with this version yet. I'll post some more as soon as I can. You do the same if you get it installed.

I have 5728 running here too, but still hick-ups with Flip3D/Aero. Very disappointed of this. Bugged it again, we'll see what MS/NVidia/Dell find out.

If I turn off Glass, everything is just running very good. Can't install my network printer, some error with spooler subsystem. I hope the next interim (and last release before RTM) runs well - for me they just have to fix Aero performance and network printer installation...

I'm sure if I had installed this build on my notebook it would also hick-up with Aero/Glass turned on too. But here on my desktop I'm running 2.8 GBs of RAM. That's the only reason I can think of why it runs so good on here. They just need to fix the performance of Aero and a few other things. But this build is taking less RAM than others, so they're getting better. Pre-RC1 and RC1 were terrible about that. lol

I have a desktop which scores with 2.0 for Aero, and Aero is running perfectly smooth. It also has 1 GB RAM and everything's just perfect.

That why I can't understand the performance problems occuring on my D820. It has a better process, a better video card but is running worse...

Yeah that is strange. My notebook also has a better cpu than my desktop and has 1GB of RAM.
