Dell 17" Laptop/Video Card Compatibility table!

Thread Starter
I'd lke this to be a conclusive list of video cards that are compatible with the 17" + Dell line, I don't know *everything* so suggestions and corrections FTW!
<table border="2">
<tr><td>&nbsp;</td><td>X300</td><td>X1400</td><td>6800 Go</td><td>6800 Ultra Go</td><td>7800 Go</td><td>7800 GTX Go</td><td>7900 GS Go</td><td>7900 GTX Go</td></tr>
<tr><td>9300</td><td><a href="http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/sullivbo.htm#wp1006368">Yes</a></td><td>No</td><td><a href="http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/sullivbo.htm#wp1006368">Yes</a></td><td><a href="http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=113866">Hack</a></td><td>No</td><td><a href="http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=113866">Hack</a></td><td>No</td><td>No</td></tr>
<tr><td>XPS Gen 2/M170</td><td>Yes</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td><td>Yes</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td><td>No</td><td>No</td></tr>
<tr><td>9400/E1705(Integrated Graphics Installed)</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td></tr>
<tr><td>9400/E1705</td><td>No</td><td><a href="http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/sm/video.htm#wp1006368" target="_blank">Yes</a></td><td>Mod</td><td>No</td><td><a href="http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/sm/video.htm#wp1006368" target="_blank">Yes</a></td><td>No</td><td><a href="http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/sm/video.htm#wp1006368" target="_blank">Yes</a></td><td>Mod</td></tr>
<tr><td>XPS M1710</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td><td>???</td><td>Yes</td><td>Yes</td></tr>

</table>

Hack - This requires hacking the BIOS to another model to enable support for the card and required power.

Mod - This requires modifying the internal compartment of the laptop chassis to physically fit the card, BIOS already supports it.

LET ME KNOW, either by replying in this thread, or PMing me any additional info, and I will update!

Big thanks to JaxChris for some clarification!

The XPS Gen 2 row should look just like M170. Not sure about the 7900 GS Go, though.
All the newer E1705's have the 7900 GS as an optional upgrade now.
You should adda column for the 7900GTX and check it for the E1710/9400 and the M1710.

What I really want is more info on what cards can work with modded stuff, I.E. can 7900 GTX work with the 9300 if the 9300 is modded? etc.
Here are your yes/no's in order:

Yes No Yes Hack No N/A Hack No No
Yes No Yes Yes No N/A Yes No No
No No No No No N/A No No No
No Yes No No Yes N/A No Yes Mod
No No No No Yes N/A No Yes Yes

Now there is a row missing in my reply because there is no such thing as an XPS M190.

Next, the X1300 is for the E1505 (15" laptop) and on the 17" 9400/E1705 series it is the X1400 - correct that.

Then, there is this 7800 GS?!?! Doesn't exist. It's a typo you've read somewhere. It's just Go 7800, no GS.

And after that is the the Go 6800 does not fit in the E1705/9400.

Finally here are the abbreviations I used for other responses:

Hack - This requires hacking the BIOS to another model to enable support for the card and required power.

Mod - This requires modifying the internal compartment of the laptop chassis to physically fit the card, BIOS already supports it.

Enjoy... any other questions you can just PM.

The 9300 can't be upgraded to the 7900's series

Hmm, could I get more info on the 7800GTX Go? It seems funny that it would only work on a modded 9300, not the XPS Gen2/M170?
The 7800 GTX does work in the gen2/M170. Didn't M170's ship with those cards??
Yeah LOL, my XPS gen 2 had a geforce go 7800 gtx in it.

I had the 6800 Go in my 9400 laptop working fine for almost two months until I could get a 7900 GS through Ebay.
All that has to be done is to unsolder a mounting post for the Keyboard from the mainboard. Instead of the mounting post I glued a nut to the 6800Go board. Everything absolutely troublefree, but of course slower than a 7900GS. When I installed the 7900 GS I soldered back the original mounting post.

Good info! Thanks! If people when they post about mods, could they link to a tutorial(PReferably on this here forums) on how to do the mod? that way I can just have the words "Mod" and "Hack" be links to how to do it?

Can an E1705 with an ATI X1400 be easily upgraded to a 7900GS?

In other words, does the X1400 video card just pop out and the 7900GS pop back in, without have to mess with thermal paste and all that stuff?

Any good links on removing an X1400 or 7900GS from an E1705?

(and BTW, the table above shows an E1710...is that an error, or does an E1710 really exist?)

Thanks for any links to pictorial instructions you might have.

Dell Online Service Manual @ support.dell.com gives the best directions and illustration by far.

It's a typo. No such model as an Inspiron E1710.

And if you're looking to get a 7900GS, let me know.

Funny thing, if you GOOGLE "E1710" there are lots of finds! But, I didn't think it existed.

Thanks for the info on the user manual!

Doh, I can't type. Fixed that!

Added Links for the hacks for 9300. I'll try and find the 9400 later.

Add column for X600 It can be put in 9300 If you swap heatsink.

6800 ultra works fine with the 9400 e1705.
There are a bunch of people that have installed it no issues, just have to remove a single keyboard mount.

I think the M90 needs to be listed here just so people know.
