Help Acer Hdd Replace?!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

can anybody know how to replace HDD in acer aspire 1642wlmi?

The old one is 40 gb/4200rpm the new one is 80gb/5400rpm.

I tried it without BIOS upgrade and the laptop had gone crazy I did not go into the BIOS and did not recognise the HDD.

So I upgraded the BIOS and I could go into the BIOS but the laptop was not recognise the HDD still.

I found some where on forum some acer laptop does not recognise the 5400rpm hdd is this true?

I do hope I don't have to sell my laptop because this problem.
I need a bigger space for Vmware things.

So can anybody help me what wrong is?

LAPTOP: ACER ASPIRE 1642WLMI 40GBHDD/4200RPM SEAGATE CENTRINO 1.73.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

just a quick idea.. check the jumper settings on the hard drive to make sure they are the same as the old one.. some of the laptop drive channels are quite picky and are hard wired in the bios about whether they're going to have master or csel and stuff.. apples are notorious for this.. they don't tell you ..

So,
thanks everybody!

I can't belive it, the first time when I put it in the notebook is good detect the HDD and boot the windows.

When restart the system the HDD is crap.
Does not boot the system and I can't go into the BIOS as well.
Just one way to boot again the system have to put back the original HDD and boot the whole system and shut down and change the new one.

Another interesting things the first time when I put into the notebook the new one and start the system and I pushed the ESC key for have a look the system test always does not detect the HDD correct.

The new one is works good in external case quick and "fast"(like an USB)

So I've never seen anything like this before.
I found only one things on the net some Acer HDD system bus does not accept the 5400/7200rpm HDD if it is real I think the bigger "W" the problem.(Sounds silly but if it is looks like real)

The old one is 0.45A useing the new one is 0.85A

I'm quiet upset I crashed the bios with wrong software and I had to buy an external floppy(£25) to restore old bios and the HDD was £65 with external case.(for nothing)

So it was a wasted time and many as well!!!!!!!!!
I have to use again my USB external HDD.

Sorry for my poor English
