This morning I brought my laptop (M6805) to work, swap out the HDD, so I can work on my video editing.
Just fired out about 2 hrs ago and every thing was normal, then all of the sudden, it lock up then the video disappear for a minute.
It rebooted itself then came back then reboot again. When it was booting up, I notice the lower 3rd of the screen was not displaying properly.
When it came back, not all icons were showing on the desktop, but the text for the icons was.........

I did a Windows update right after I start up with the production HDD, but before that, I did a restored point. I went back to the restore point but did help either.

So I put the other HDD back on and boot it up. Same thing.....! What the *$#&

The laptop is not OC and running at 800MHz, I don't play games so was not pushing video at all.

Is this a sign of bad video since 2 HDD that was working properly doing the same thing?

Yes, it's my $72 system.
Now why did I think about connecting a monitor to it.
I did however load (DSL) Damn Small Linux on it and run from CD.
Even though it was only displaying 800x600 all icons showed up ok.
If it's the GPU that is failing, is there a way to fix it? Or do I have to scrap it.

gpu failing on m6805 = time for new mobo
i would try again a clean install, using the latest via chipset driver, amd processor driver and ati driver,
one never knows

I will try a fresh install on it tonight. If mobo is bad, where can I get a replacement for this. Dont trust what's on fleaby!

u might want to pm Spinitch, he can guide u to a very good reliable source.
other than that, u can contact gateway, i know many times they would replace/ship the board at a very reasonable cost

I would try messing with the display first before ruling out the motherboard. I've seen corrupt display's before and thought it was a video card going out, but ended up to be the LCD cable behind the screen connected to the inverter. Let me know if you need any replacement parts.

OK, this will give me a chance to fix my flicker display then.
My display started to flicker about 2 months after I fix my hindge.
I'll fix that first then re-install fresh OS, then will let you guys know what the result is.

Alright........ what can I do to it. What I would really like to do is to add a small fan on the chipset.
That thing generate heat more then CPU/GPU combined (when on idle)
I can probably put a small fan on it, but, where do I get the power for the fan.
I think I would only need about 3 volts or so. Don't need any high volt/speed.

Well, I reload the OS on it and seems ok for about 15 minutes.
XP Pro only display 800x600 but I update the driver from original restore cd (disc #3) and right after that it start doing it again.
I connect to external monitor and shows same thing as onboard display.
I updated the BIOS from 0F08.P00 to 0F08.P02E didn't make any difference.
I'll DL and install the latest driver and see what will happen tonight.
As of right now, it's on it's last leg and I will probably have to get a new mobo VERY soon.

I will give it one more tare down this weekend and see if any thing else I can see/do.

Does any one know if Gateway still have a replacement mobo for these?

Thanks
