Free memory upgrade

I recieved an email 2 days ago from Alienware saying that the 512 mb of memory that I had ordered on my m5550 was on back order so they are going to give me a free upgrade to 1 gb. I called the customer support and they said they didnt have any knowledge of any upgrade. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on and what issues Alienware could be having with their memory?

i too got the same email. I called to check my status and had them verify that the email was indeed correct. Alienware was able to verify the upgrade for me.

There seem to be industry wide issues with the DDR2 memory with the core 2 duo. I'm not sure if that's the reason AW is doing this or not, but it makes sense that they're resolving any possible conflicts and will then reimburse customers for any delays by doubling the memory.

Are they doubling the ram for everyone or just for 512 orders because the 256 sticks are backordered? Also, are the newest batches of ram issue free? Doubling the memory was great customer service and makes up for the delay.

I also got that Email and was very exited to read it. Then the next day my order jumped to Phase 10 and it shipped yesterday. Since I only live 4 hours from Miami it "should" arrive today. Now for some reason I cant stop staring out the window looking for the Fed Ex Man Curse you Alienware!

I just received my new m5550, and it has 1gig of ram, but I only ordered the 512 stick... nice

Did your 1 gig of ram come in 1 sticks of 512 or 1 stick of 1 gig? I ordered the 512 option with the plan of buying 2 gigs on newegg. Acording to the alienware website my laptop is in phase 9 right now so I am wondering if I need to order 2 sticks of 1 gig still or if I only need 1. Quick question for the more tech knowledgeable people than me. If I have one stick of alienware ram with a cas latency of 4 and, for example, a stick of mushkin at the same speed but with a cas latency of 5 will that work or will it screw up the system? Thanks all

seems they upgraded most of the original 2x256MB orders (including me )... I was wondering, all of you 1GB guys, will you be still upgrading to 2GB or you'll stick to what you have for some time?

I too got an email about it. And according to the website, it shipped out. It went to phase 5 on wednesday and now it is phase 10. I can't wait to geti. It only took a little over month from the time i ordered it, but the free upgrade kinda made me forget about the long wait.

Same thing happened to me, including the whole buying 2gb from newegg. I'm gonna benchmark the 1gb alienware stuck in and the 2gb from newegg, see how big the difference is... when I get my laptop...

2 gb is always worth it for multitasking and newer games. If you do any of these two things you need 2 gigs.

I'm gonna stick with 1gig for now, as Oblivion is running fairly well on my machine - but I do intend on upping to the 2 gigs in the next couple of months....

My area-51m 766 has 1gb of ram... I frequently go down to double digits or less when playing guild wars, running winamp, gaim and probably firefox. I'll probably need the 2gb.

Looks like for now I'm gonna stick to 1GB from AW as well, especially after these "shutdown" issues discussed all around.

yeah lil Yang's didn't come w/ the 1gb upgrade, but mine did...

but i'll be sticking the 1gb upgrade into his (he only has 512) and I'll be upgrading my own w/ 2gb w00t
