Was just about to buy an XPS M1710 with 4gig of ram, 7900GTX 512mb and 2.33MHz core 2 duo but then heard this when on the phone to DELL..................... rep said G80 + Santa Rosa chipset should be out by March 07 at around about the same $$$$ as above mentioned system......................thought, no way I'm laying out $$$$$ now.....I'm waiting till March for the good gear and DX10 compatability.

Thats ~6 months from now and based on Dells track record with the XPS systems is probably more like 7-8 months from now before it will actualy ship. So what happens when March gets here and you find out that 5-6 months later the Quad core with the 1066mhz memory is going to be released? With this logic you will never have a computer.

Agree, buy it now enjoy it then when it come out, you worry about G80 or DX10 for that matter. Computer life used to be like 18 month cycle, now it like almost every day

As far as I'm aware a quad core notebook hasn't even been mentioned as yet by any manafacturer.

As for the 1066mhz fsb, no manafacturer has that mentioned on any notebook roadmap that I have seen as yet. Even though the bastards should have had them out by now they are well and truly holding back on this one.

Yes I have a computer (notebook), a i9300. It should see me through for another 6 months till a DX10 DELL notebook hits retail. My logic has matured after years of following the desktop hardware upgrade cycle that see's a product refresh every 4/6 months. Which can equate to a constant shelling out of $$$ if you want to chase the latest and greatest.

I basically want a DX10 notebook part with the Santa Rosa chipset and G80...........I can wait 6 months, would rather save my $$$$ till I can get it in 6 months than blow them now an XPS only to know that I jumped the gun prematurely.

Your missing the point, In 6 months time if you do decide to buy a new computer that is dx10 compatible I gurantee there will be news of a newer laptop platform soon to be released (Be that in the form of new processor line, motherboard supporting faster fsb and ram or even faster gx10 graphics card)

Of course there will always be better hardware just around the corner. To me though the current XPS M1710 only offers dual core, faster fsb and faster ram and vid card over my current i9300 and I can't justify paying for that atm.

However when Santa Rosa hits I will get dual core with a faster fsb (800mhz over the 533mhz in the i9300 and the 667mhz in the M1710), faster ram, better and faster grafix card (G80), DX10 compatibility and all the associated features of the new Santa Rosa chipset.............I happy to wait for this.

I think the current m1710 is a no brainer over the 9300, which I have as well:

Dual Core 2 vs Dothan processor
512 7900 GTX, vs 256 7800 GTX

You will be hardpressed to see a videocard double it's size in a laptop in the near future. I think the m1710 is a good point to stop at for 1-2 years, and with prices like what Bal is selling them for, it's not breaking the bank either. Just IMHO...

Well I look at it this way: Don't really care when DirectX 10 games are coming out, but I do want to use Vista to it full capabilities. That being said DirectX 10 is native and having a DirectX 10 card will give a guy the maximum Aero performance. Santa Rosa has the Flash memory architecture so I want to take advantage of Instant on and off which Vista will work with.

Add in that the Firewire implementation on the 1710 apparently sucks bag, the next generation looks pretty awesome. Well unless Dell does the same crappy job on it's firewire again.

Aero doesn't utilize DX10.

From what I was reading, seems the DX10 cards will be power hogs as well. somewhere in the 2-3 times that of our present cards
post #11 of 20
Well Santa Rosa for notebooks will carry an 800Mhz FSB and support DDR2800. Good news! But as far as waiting, you could always buy a lappy with complete care and hopefully it will break when Santa Rosa comes out!!!

... and Jeff, I dont think aero will run much better than it does with the current Core 2 M1710. It is silky smooth as I installed and started running it yesterday... Very fast... Much better than beta 5342. But... Vista exploded when I docked for the first time.... :P I knew it was running too good for too long to be a M$ product... lmao!

I really boils down to why upgrade now when your current machine has been running XP fine for the last year(s). Might as well wait a few months get the latest completely tuned for Vista.

If you are a hard core gamer well then that's a different story you can put the 1710 to good use now.

You must not follow the Clevo line-up very much then. They are first to market with desktop replacements. Granted they use desktop CPU's to do this on alot of models, but with the Quad Core's taking as much or less power than the old AMD X2's and Pentium 4 EE's... you can be they'll have a motherboard developed to shove in their D900 chassis before too long. And they'll likely be right there with Dell to release news of the first available G80 GPU's.

Then Alienware/Dell will buy up Clevo resale rights for most major North America, South America, and Europe markets just to prevent competition with Alienware on the next big change in ultra-high end laptops.

Quad core laptop gaming at 1066Mhz FSB... sounds pleasing.

I bet the battery for that baby would look a little like this...
There haven't even been closed-press samples for the G80 yet, and Mr. Dell is quoting sale dates.

There needs to be a "grain of salt" smiley/emote.
i would wait unlike every one else. Its either buy the vista for 400+ dollars or get it for free with your xps. Even if dell doesn't release the xps right away you could buy somthing from alienware or any othe computer manufacturer.

FUEL CELL BATTERIES ARE THE FUTURE!

You missed the point. You were on the phone ready order but you didnt because you heard something new and better was coming out 6-8 months later. What are you going to do in March (or more likely June) when you find out that a quad core / 1066 / G90 system is 6 months away? I can promise you these kinds of things are on roadmaps, these are technology driven companies and they aren't going to sit around. The competition between AMD and Intel is stronger than ever.

The G80 is supposed to have over 700 million transistors! That's more than double over the current generation. If they can beat the heat it will be awesome.
We all know it is coming but must say I feel it will be a little longer away then many think may be wrong may be right but havent herd a peep so far. I wouldnt wait i,m loveing and enjoying my M 1710 with T2500 and will not even consider merom until Vista is officially released then im not sure I will go there LOL and people are considering waiting to buy a machine? I would say 8 to 10 month for the 2nd release of merom! Thats a crazy long wait LOL

i think the operating system is pretty much factored into the total cost. but vista is going to have 3-4 different versions. and the premium versions are going to be pretty expensive. i can see at least 4 options on dells system config. options for op. systems.
