Agreed about communism

Before this degrades into a semantic battle over theory and practice with regards to Communism, I would just say that it stinks. In practice it stinks, and what good is a theory if it doesn't work. You never see a mathematician rave about a theory that is false, or scientists talk about a theory of nuclear fission that doesn't work. Anyway, as for the practice of Communism, I spent last year in China, and all I saw was individuals trying to practice capitalism, while preaching Marxist, Maoist and other socialist theories till their heads turned blue. It was amazing to see how truly contradictory theory and practice can become. And yet they thought that China was a model of Socialist behavior. Perhaps on a Macro-scopic level, where government is involved, this may be partially true, but on a micro-economic level, it was just every man for himself, just like it is here in the old US of A.

Oh, and paper money: worst currency ever. How much energy do we waste constantly replacing our money every 18 months or less. (can't remember the actual life of a bill)

True, but how easy is it to lose a coin?

What's easier to carry, a $50 bill (1 piece of paper) or 50 $1 coins? Or worse, a single $50 coin (should one be made) that is easily lost in the couch or whatever?

I love coins, but paper money works because it is less difficult to lose as well as counterfit.

I just saw History Channel's "Hands On History" where they went to the San Francisco Mint to watch proof-sets being made. That was cool!

Here's another one...

WORST IDEA EVER: Insurance. Financing. Banking.

Trace back most people's woes and it's money related... go back even further, and it's finance-related.

From rich to poor, the financial bloodsuckers of the world make lawyers seem honorable.

Anyone enjoy paying fee's to someone else to hold your money? And worse, take your money, turn around and profit from it - giving you only a cut of the profit, then taking a "fee" on top of that?

Sure in a bullish market, people don't cry foul, but when the returns are NEGATIVE, don't charge me a FEE! My matress then earns more and I don't have to hassle with brokers and agents and tellers.

Argh!

Here's an idea for a lively thread: Name some other "Worst Ever" ideas...

Some things come to mind: BLINKING TEXT is one...

An IP-sharing module for a laptop is another... (Oooooo.... hissssss!)

To call Me an OS is almost giving it too much credit LOL... I had it installed for under 1 week before i uninstalled and went back to 98...it's usb support was just short of horrendous... wouldnt work with my usb dsl modem(bad mistake to get usb dsl modem in first place but thats another story).... remember these are the same people who brought you microsoft bob and couldnt admit that it was a stupid idea and decided well we cant sell it alone lets basically integrate it into microsoft office and make them have it in the form of office assistants.. It'd be nice if they would spend a little time concentrating on fixing bugs in office that have been there for a while instead of having each new version of office seem to make bigger and bigger files. like word files you make from 1 version to another of the same page count and approx same length yet later version is bigger.. why cant they manage to make it make smaller files in newer versions?

Before I knew jack****, I dualed XP Pro and ME. Wow, did my friends laugh!

All I knew is I wanted one game to run, and it would NOT run in xp pro; ffvii for the pc

Here you go ME:

Let's see...another bad idea to add to the list...

Having sports integrated into schools. Schools are where you LEARN, damnit. All that funding that goes towards neanderthals running around after a ball of plastic *cough*football*cough*; couldn't you think of a BETTER use for it? Like a new lab, new textbooks, or...gasp...high teacher pay? Think of the problems we could solve...

But if you lost a 50 dollar coin it would make it all the more fun when you look under the cushions and find it again.

ARE YOU CRAZY???? Football PAYS for everything? Profits from football funds everything else! You really don't know anything about it! And football is awesome! Thank God for football!

get rid of FOOTBALL?

quite true.

a University is a business as much as it is a school, and they wouldn't just throw money away on something that doesn't bring a ton more back in. Of course, I suppose having an awesome football team might entice some folks to go to that school and pay tuition, but any school thats worth a darn has more people applying than getting in every year; so much for that thought

but of course, I'm a diehard Gator fan, so take that as you may

lessee, worst idea ever...

anyone ever used AOL? the instant messenger on the integrated browser has a "Cancel" button on the bottom of every IM window. I'll be danged if I didn't hit that when I really wanted to hit "Send" at LEAST twice a day. Grrr... thank God those days are behind me.

and in keeping with Yale's republican karma, "Tax Brackets"

flame on

hey, bradt.... you go to the LSU-Florida game last year?? I was there!!
no, unfortunately
I missed going to a lot of games this past year because UF sells tickets before the school year starts. Being my first year, I got the phone number to purchase them after the grad students, seniors, juniors, etc...

Long story short, no football tickets

But I was able to buy them off friends who couldn't make it to games, or in worse case scenarios, off of scalpers :P

next year though, every last home game and every close away game, I will be at!

Cool, man.... Football is unbelievable.... I LOVE IT! I go to LSU (as you can tell) and nothing tops a Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium... You ought to come down to Baton Rouge next season to catch a game in Death Valley... you'll never forget it! Our place rocks! The Swamp ain't bad either...

Agreed Football :headbang:

I think whoever said football was the bane of education just got beat up by the players 1 too many times. jk

I love watching football. Not much more exciting.

Worst sport ever: cricket , curling , figure skating , golf . (although I love golf, and play often, it is an ACTIVITY, not a sport)

Other activities called sports: hunting, eating (ever seen those competitions), lumberjack events (come on, sawing a log is not a sport???!!!!, and to a certain extent, baseball. Although again, I am a big fan.

By the way, to you two college pigskin fans, sorry, but you gotta love them Buffaloes!!!! CU FOREVER!
How could you by any stretch of the imagination, not call baseball a sport????

Sorry......

But anything that a beer swilling, mullet wearin hick like John Kruk can do is NOT a sport...

And he was not even a pitcher...

Besides, name another sport where the defense has complete control of the game (or ball)....

I once heard it stated that anything you could do while drinking a beer is not a sport. I thought that was pretty good.

Baseball:

Golf:

Just so you know, I HATE sports. Not the actual sports themselves, I don't mind playing a good game of tennis, or golf, etc. They are fine.

What I hate is the absolutely idiotic culture around it. Just so you know, this applies ESPECIALLY to the Ivy League, where, even upon much dedication, our teams are considered "a joke." So bear that in mind.

I completely abhor when I have to WATCH sports. I mean, what the hell are you thinking? You are cheering on a team that (a) you are not in, (b) you will never be in, (c) you have no relation to, whatsoever.

I mean, you like sports? Fine, go play them. Oh, but those stupid, stupid games! ARGH! Jay! Superbowl Sunday! Let's find the most boring thing to do in the history of humanity! Let's not move at all for hours, watch expensive ads, and pretend we play football!

There, I had to get that out, and I know it won't go down well with some people, but I couldn't help myself. Skye, I agree with you whole-heartedly. A university is a place for learning and teaching. If anything, sports should be peripheral, and only important to those who PLAY them.

Cheers.

YAY! GO YALE!

Another:
Full ride scholarships for sports players
Of course, they also get preferred housing and whatever else they DAMN WELL PLEASE.

you're missing it

Watching sports is analogous to watching a movie, or television show. You don't watch a movie because you starred in it, you watch a movie for entertainment.

Personally, I've never played football on a regulated team, but I've played tons of shirts/skins games with my buddies. As a consequence, I know how difficult it is to play. Watching on TV, seeing a quarterback leap over a defensive line that weighs a combined 1,000 pounds and land barely into the endzone, its exhilirating. I can't do anything like that. It's like watching a stuntman in a movie do some unbelieveably crazy act.

And may I remind you that the first college football game EVER was between Rutgers and Princeton, two fine schools for the pursuit of higher education.

My school, for example:
Without football, my school would have to double the fees on EVERYTHING (tuition, housing, meals, etc) just to match its former income. Since I am putting myself through college, this is absolutely invaluable.

Thank God for football!

Brad

edit: by the way Skye, I mentioned before that a University is a business. Not all football players get full rides and benefits, only the good ones; that encourages better players to go to the school, which makes the team better, which improves ticket sales, which means more money for the university, which means they can hire more and better professors, which makes the school better as a whole.

BTW: full rides and special treatment doesn't happen just for football players :-P I am a National Merit Scholar; as a result, UF gives me tons of money and benefits.

Study hard, or learn to play football

Not so. When you watch a movie, you don't bring a sixpack of beer, get drunk and act around like monkeys with your "buddies." Ok, that's a bit of a hyperbole, but face it, it really is like that most of the time. It's being with "the guys;" killing brain-cells and whatnot.

A movie or a television show can be one of these things, IF NOT MORE:
a) Funny.
b) Dramatic (as in Drama, meaning, suspense, etc.)
c) Informative (as in, learning MORE than the resulting score of a game).

If ANY show I watch, or movie, does not have at least one of those, I don't watch it, and it's crap.

Some classical examples:
Seinfeld - Funny.
Law and Order - Dramatic.
Discovery Channel - Informative.

The Matrix - All of the Above.

Granted, some shows do MORE, and try to "combine" genres, with the notorious "dramedia" being an example. This is fine too. Sometimes the results are good (Ed) sometimes they suck (The Tick).

But there are always those elements present. Now, back to sports. I repeat my original feeling "what the hell are they thinking?"

I mean, seriously, NOTHING happens other than a team edging out another, and viceversa. There's no adrenaline, as in REAL games, because you're not playing them. There's no humour, no drama, no information being learned, NOTHING.

This is not against football, mind you. Tennis on TV? Shoot me, shoot me now. Golf? Pure torture. You see, it applies to all of them.

I know that college sports started with good universities. I never doubted it, or questioned it. But as you can see, the academics took over, which is why nowadays most of our teams suck. We can no longer bring in an athlete that scores 400 on the SATs. Combined. After eight times.

Cheers.
