Not so. When you watch a movie, you don't bring a sixpack of beer, get drunk and act around like monkeys with your "buddies." Ok, that's a bit of a hyperbole, but face it, it really is like that most of the time. It's being with "the guys;" killing brain-cells and whatnot.
This is not true for me. I'm there to watch the game. I care about it!

A movie or a television show can be one of these things, IF NOT MORE:
a) Funny.
b) Dramatic (as in Drama, meaning, suspense, etc.)
c) Informative (as in, learning MORE than the resulting score of a game).
Watching a sport can be all of that! Especially dramatic!

There's no adrenaline, as in REAL games, because you're not playing them.
This is not true AT ALL. I go crazy with adrenaline during a good game. Esp an LSU football game...

Quote:
There's no humour, no drama, no information being learned, NOTHING.
Again, not true. Just because you don't like to watch, doesn't mean it's not there. There's tons of drama! There's humor in parts... and for learning, there's human percerverance.

I know that college sports started with good universities. I never doubted it, or questioned it. But as you can see, the academics took over, which is why nowadays most of our teams suck. We can no longer bring in an athlete that scores 400 on the SATs. Combined. After eight times.
And you should generalize like that, my brother started at LSU in Football, and I would venture to say is smarter than almost everybody in your Ivy League schools. He was begged to come to them... and he's now a top othopedic surgeon...

Again, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad.... I love it!

Fine, let's say you are the rare exception that behaves intelligently during the game. That's still JUST YOU. Or you and your friends. As I said, I hate the -idiotic- culture around it, so then don't include yourself into my target population.

Ok, -THIS- is bull. Why? Because it's a direct contradiction. You stated previously that you DID -NOT- fit into my described category of people acting like monkeys going CRAZY around the TV. Or in the stadiums, where this can in fact become even dangerous. So it's time to make a choice, it's one or the other I'm afraid. They are mutually exclusive.

Oh... come ON! Dramatic? Maybe, I'll give you a 50/50 on that one, but FUNNY? HA! and INFORMATIVE? please. Yes, there can be some elements of suspense in there, but nothing like a good dramatic SHOW, or MOVIE. Think about this one for a second, because it makes perfect sense. Why? Because in EVERY SINGLE game that has ever been, is being, or will be played, EVER, there will only be THREE possible outcomes [In binary games, e.g. football, baseball, soccer]:

a) Team 1 wins.
b) Team 2 wins.
c) Tie.

Sure, the scores can vary, but this is usually irrelevant [outside of betting and gambling, which is another little "virtue" of sports.]

I am not generalizing. I did NOT say that all athletes are not smart. I did NOT say all smart people are bad athletes. I did not make ANY generalizations. What I DID say, is that the BEST athletes, the ones that truly go on to make the ranks of the legends, the ones that actually MATTER in a top-ten team, they are not top-notch university material. I don't doubt your brother is both smart AND a good player, but is he as good as [insert football god here... I dunno, Dan Marino?]. I didn't think so. If he is, then, my friend, you got yourself an incredibly rarity, and you SHOULD realize that it very, very, seldom happens. Moreover, [if he is, THAT good] why isn't he kicking ass out there right now?

Derivative lemma: just because you like it doesn't mean it's good either.

But fine, if you like to do it, go ahead. However, this thread was about what we thought were BAD ideas, and well, I personally think that's a really bad one. Let's not get too carried away here.

Cheers.

They aren't mutually exclusing. You're talking phallasy here... I do go crazy with adrenaline... I don't drink, and I don't beat up people. There's nothing wrong with that!

Not true... John Lynch etc.. you're generalizing. Every person is different.

I doubt I can win a war of words with you, but please understand that I love sports (both playing and watching, and I do both)... I have that right... and there's nothing wrong with it!

If ANY show I watch, or movie, does not have at least one of those, I don't watch it, and it's crap.

Some classical examples:
Seinfeld - Funny.
Law and Order - Dramatic.
Discovery Channel - Informative.

The Matrix - All of the Above.

Granted, some shows do MORE, and try to "combine" genres, with the notorious "dramedia" being an example. This is fine too. Sometimes the results are good (Ed) sometimes they suck (The Tick).

But there are always those elements present. Now, back to sports. I repeat my original feeling "what the hell are they thinking?"

I mean, seriously, NOTHING happens other than a team edging out another, and viceversa. There's no adrenaline, as in REAL games, because you're not playing them. There's no humour, no drama, no information being learned, NOTHING.

This is not against football, mind you. Tennis on TV? Shoot me, shoot me now. Golf? Pure torture. You see, it applies to all of them.

I can understand all the things you mention in reference to golf on tv.. I mean come on why waste time watching some guy hit a ball around with a club in the atmosphere of a library, tennis and bowling and billards on tv.. yes..... at least in football you have crowd noise and other stuff and it is entertaining to me at least, although it is more entertaining actually being at the game sometimes and not seeing just what the tv people want you to see or deem interesting.. I disagree with you on the matrix.. most of it was way over my head I was lost through like 75% of the dvd... Ok maybe that hasd something to do with it losing a few things while i took a second or 2 every now and then when i needed another beer but still i wasnt out of range from the dvd that long...

Its gotten even better since they put in tiebreakers... Talk about excitement when your watching a game go into 6 or 7 overtimes.. it has happened... Sometimes it can be funny.. seeing how some of the fans dress up and such....... it can be quite crazy.. But each is entitled to their opinions.. for example some people might love opera and some people (me included) might abhor it...

Fine, fine...

To each, his own.

BUT, I still don't like them. Hehehe.

Cheers.

Oh, the opera. That's another can of worms right there. Frankly, I can't make up my mind it about it entirely. However, having a certain background in Classical and Romantic western music, I think I can give you some pointers. First, the type you -probably- hate is Italian opera. This is the most common kind, and is the one I can't seem to stand. However, there is some VERY good German opera out there (Wagner comes to mind), who, in my opinion, are much better.

[No offense to Italians out there. And I'm studying Italian as we speak, so don't even try...]

It's a -completely- different type of thing. If you listen to Tristan und Isolde, you will understand what I mean. It does away with much of the "ridiculousness" of traditional opera. It's much more serious, more twisted, sadder, and with a lot of philosophical content to it. It's based, after all, on the thoughts and writings of Schaupenhauer. Strauss can also hold his own, and Salomé is certainly a masterpiece. Don't believe me? This is the man who composed Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the opening theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey, by Kubrick.

Cheers.

BACK TO TOPIC....

As I mentioned in my Sony DVD Burner review I have a good candidate for the Worst-Ever...

A crippled MUSICMATCH jukebox that cannot play/handle MP3's.

Yes, that's right, an mp3 player that doesn't do mp3's!

Thanks, Sony! Good thing I bought the REAL version some years ago, and have been getting free updates ever since.

Gaming in linux Rocks...thank you.

Umm true you cannot play ALL games, but the ones running are the ones i like anyhow ( HL, CS, q3a, UT, ut2k3, SofI, SoFII, Alice in Wonderland, RtCW, Tactical Op ).

With Trusted computing comin.....ARGHHHH quick refreshing *nix. MS would have loved to change the win32 API, but hey they were advised it was a bad move to break the compatibility. As the results.....well i do not know anybody that doesn't hardlock or got to ctrl alt del and kill the looped up process. Funny that people don't care about stability but want to use their favorite apps. Linux has lost the desktop war. Very sad, as it is still complex to know ya way in linux. Hope a lot of people will cross tho, as trusted computing walks, its is never too late.

By the way, VMware runs nicely on windows www.vmware.com so get a demo, give it a try .load linux on it without having to touch your hdd. DemoLinux and Knoppix offer live CD, who run linux of a ram disk, ya just have to boot from cd.

opera puts me to sleep. I watch it, but then I'm asleep. I think german opera is the kind of opera where they dont sing everything; italian opera is.

As for the whole sports thing, golf is NOT a sport, baseball is almost crossing the line into not being a sport, and football ... is a sport. I say, the more running you do, the more of a sport it is. So soccer kicks butt.

Watching it is different, but you gotta play it to understand it. Watching hockey is boring unless you've actually played it; then you can admire their skill. Same goes for soccer, football, what have you.

and finally, that new n-gage from nokia that's gonna come out is a stupid idea. If you can make a competent cell phone, do it, dont try to branch out into other markets giving yourself a bad name.

Give it up! Nintendo ownz j00!

Sorry about that last part.

not to stir up old wounds, but i definetly agree with yale.

I'm a nerd, geek, wahtever the hell you wanna call it, but in my high school, everything was sports sports sports, which is all fine and dandy, but there was NO money for anysort of computer classes, other then keyboarding and some CS classes (i wish counterstrike) Im not bitter that i got beat up by football players, cause i didnt, i was actually friends with most of them, still talk to them today now that im in college, i just hated the fact that it was ok for them to fail, as long as they threw a touchdown or got that tackle, but i can't fail, even if i could program great (which i cant) or build a computer or fix a network issue.

Sports are fine, if you play them, its fun to go run around throw balls and kick balls and what not, but paying people millions of dollars to run on a field for a few hours every now and then...i just think theres better places money could be spent...i.e. a nice big parkinglot/airport in lets say....iraq? or how about afghanistan thoughi commend that guy on his new rule of the country

Anyways, on the superbowl, i only watch the commercials, they're pretty entertaining, (i use ING its nice) when the actual game is on, im socializing, playing a video game, or channel surfing.

Hrm, im partial to agree with you denkc, yes playing a sport does help you have a little more appriciation for it, but i'd rather go PLAY it then sit on my ass and watch someone play it....i mean its just kinda stupid......anyways, could call me bitter casue i didnt get to further my education in computers in school, instead i had to waste my time learning wasteful crap like english (granted its nice to have....but i mean really, if im gonna be in IT, do i need to know abou beowulf? other then the server cluster

well before i rant anymore i'll hit the button at the bottom of the page

heh, yeah, it's kinda depressing to know that they don't have to try hard in school and they'll still (potentially) have a future, but the actual acceptance is very little, so most still have to do well. now they have all the stuff where you have to have good grades to stay in grades, so that's cool.

I'm geek, nerd, sure whatever, but I don't get beaten up either. I think theres some sort of invisible wall. Most ask for help in school, actually =P

the thing is though that everyone has their talent...and everyone needs money. It just sucks that some talents pay more than others =P

So is YALE back or not?

I saw Yale logged in earlier today... is he (you, if you are Yale2006 and reading this) back from break?

now back on topic...

Worst Ever:
Episode 1 - 3 (prediction for 3): WORST prequels EVER. Man, what a drag those were.

Especially for those of us old enough to remember the magic of seeing and waiting for the real Star Wars in the theaters.

Didn't need no stinkin' digital "fluff" either - Tatooine was fine the way it was!

About the old Star wars movies without the "digital fluff." I think those movies would be better if they wouldn't have used the cheesy green screen stuff. It is truly painful to watch.

I quite agree. Green-screening is becoming a bit too popular. I mean, digital backgrounds and what-not are really impressive as far as "looking real" - but nothing beats reality.

You know, they went to Alaska to film the Hoth scenes... now-a-days, they just sit in a nice warm studio. Can't respect that.

I says ya gotta get down and dirty to earn respect! Don't fake it like a politician...

Hmmm...communism, corruption of principle by expediency or corruption of expediency by principle? Hehe...had to say that...

There's nothing wrong with the theory. Just like most metaphysical theories, dialectical materialism is based on many a priori assertions that are pretty much impossible to refute logically. The application is the real test...
