Hi,

I have been playing aroud with Linux,(Ubuntu) and i cant get my wireless card to work.I have a Intel ProWireless 2200BG,it works fine with Windows XP.

I dont know how to set it up as well,i get the impression it has detected it as there is a wireless card in the network section.

I dont have Linux installed on my hardrive yet,i am just playing around with the CD.

Also if i put linux on how do i remove it?

Thanks,

Nick,

ubuntu does have modules that support that 2200 so you should be ok. Go to System > Administration > Networking to setup your card. pick the essid that was detected, type in the wep key if you ahve one, and you should be ready to go. if your card isn't detected then you need to install linux so that you can setup ndiswrapper or reinstall the 2200 modules.

removing linux is like removing any os, simply format the partition(s) and install something fresh. don't forget to "fixmbr" to remove grub.

I have the Aspire 5102 WLMi and find when traveling that I am more likely to detect and establish a wi-fi internet connection with my Mepis or Ubuntu Linux Live CD than Windows XP. I don't understand my the connections are inconsistent. Some times it seems to work great and the next time I can't detect any networks even though it worked the night before and the hotel says it is still running.

Ubuntu Dapper detected and started off that same card when I was using a friend's Acer laptop so I am sure its working. Might be that you need to put in your WEP.

Thanks for your help,i am using WPA TKIP-AES.

I have found the Intel wireless driver for the laptop using Linux.I might go ahead and install Linux.

How do i partition the hardrive? I only want 5gb for Linux.
Ubuntu has a partitioning tool,in the installer where you can tell Ubuntu where to install.

If you run into any hassles, just ask.

MAKE SURE you defrag your Hard Drive BEFORE partitioning it.

With resizing any partition you run the risk of data loss, but defragging it can help cut this risk down substantially depending on how full the drive is before you begin.

Thanks guys!

So if i install Ubuntu and the Intel Wirless Driver it WILL work?

My main use of my laptop is for the internet.
the intel wifi driver is already included in ubuntu, so no extra installation required (or at least not very likely).

also greatly recommend at least 10gb for linux....5 should be enough but you will quickly feel very limited once you start to expand your uses

Will it muck up my windows configuration?
nah...just be sure to defrag before you do any partition work.
