Dell 17" LCD's...the agony and ecstacy!

As many of you may remember, back in August 2006 there was a big hullabaloo about the crappy quality of LCD's being shipped in Dell XPS M1710's and E7105's. I, for one, was part of that discussion, and at the time had a very expensive M1710 in which I went through three different LCD's trying to get one that had even lighting from left to right, equally visible across the screen without having to move your head, good colors, bright whites, etc.

I finally gave up and sold my M1710, pretty much for what I paid, and have been using a D620 since.

Lately, due to a coupon deal at the Dell Outlet, I managed a fairly well equipped E1705 for around $1000 after discount (see below). Personally, I think it was a pricing mistake, but that's not the point. The LCD screen on this E1705 is phenomenal. It's what my $3000+ M1710 should have had, but Dell was not capable of providing.

My packing list said the panel is "NH718 MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17WU, LG PHILIPS LCD, ENHANCED, 9400".

Bright whites, perfectly uniform lighting, no bleeding (darkened room, and NO light bleed), excellent colors.

Ironically, I spend 1/3 as much, get pretty much the same computer (7900GS vs 7900GTX and no fancy LED lights), and wind up with the LCD i've always wanted. Thanks Dell!

Yeah, we are going through this again. My old 9400 had an LG screen like you, PERFECT. My new M1710 has the shittiest screen I've seen in a while.

When you had LCD replacements, did you get Dell to ship them to you or did you have to do the "We'll send a tech over" dance? I won't let anyone touch my laptop, but want to give dell a call an get them to send me a new LCD. Any tips?

The first two, Dell sent me, and I replaced them. My original was a Sharp, which had great color, but the left and right sides of the screen had so much light falloff when looking directly on, that I found myself bobbing my head back and forth just to see the screen!

My first replacement was a Samsung. Colors were duller, more backlight bleeding, better with respect to light falloff, but still pretty bad.

The second replacement, was an LG (as I requested, and Dell honestly worked hard to get me). The problem was, for some unknown reason, when it was connected, the brightness controls didn't work, and the screen would go totally white for a couple of seconds when powered on, off, or asleep.

The third replacement was via a Dell tech. It wasn't even a replacement, as somehow some digits got turned around on the order, and the tech wound up bringing out a D620 bezel.

The fourth replacement (via a Dell tech), was another LG, which did the same as the first LG. No brightness control, and totally white when on, off, or asleep.

At this point Dell tech support kinda stopped responding to my emails (which, BTW were never angry or mean). So, I went on vacation, and when I came back, decided it wasn't worth messing with anymore, and I sold it.

I've been working with my D620 since then, until I saw an E1705 that I had sold a client a few months back. I was working on it, and thought, WOW, this LCD looks great. It was an LG. At the same time, I came across an Outlet coupon and started shopping. Looks like I got lucky, as the screen I have now is THE BEST!!! I LOVE IT!

So, that's my story (the long version). But, you really didn't want to hear all that, did you?

The variation among these LCDs is something else. I bought a refurb M90 w/ the wxga+ screen and it had the AU Optronics screen. The colors were awful, no brightness, light leakage, awful viewing angles, and overall blurry feel to the LCD. Dell should honestly be embarrassed for using such a sorry excuse for an LCD. It had a dead pixel too so I ended up returning it and bought a new E1705 w/ the wxga+ screen, but this time I got an LG screen, and it is worlds different from the AUO. It is absolutely perfect and I'm so glad I got the E1705 instead (though having a laptop w/ a 512mb gpu was insane ). I can't believe Dell cheaps out even w/ the Precision line of notebooks, while my E1705 costs thousands less and has a stellar LCD. LG

I remember all that........then i got my i9300 and it had a actual good screen .....no leakage no dead pixels........then a year later the warranty drops......and BLAMO! i have a red line and a blue line going down my screen......nothing like getting shady parts.............hell if it was'nt for the battery recall i'd be buying a new battery also.......I WILL NOT BE A REPEAT CUSTOMER FOR THE BIG BAD DELL MACHINA........NEVER!

I have to agree with that the 9400 has a extremely good LCD!!! My XPS M1710 also have a LG Phillips, but its not as good as my LG phillips on the 9400!!!

Why is this?? Is there another LG Phillips screen for the XPS M1710 or is it just another thing?

Its really weird that the XPS M1710 has a LCD that is less quality than a 9400 for that price!!!

i thought the problems with the screens were on the m1710's not the m90. My m90 has a great screen. it's a samsung but it's great minus the small dark corners on the bottom of the screen.

Exactly the reason I sold my M1710 (for what I paid), and bought an E1705, that is mostly equal to the M1710, for one third the price, and I have the most beautiful LCD!!! Everytime I look at it, the bright whites, the bright colors, excellent viewing angles...I count my lucky stars!!!

Things might have changed by now...I heard there is something called an LG REV 2 panel being shipped with new M1710's...

Maybe you'll get lucky! "prolly not" though!

It's too bad after spending that kind of dough, one has to wonder if they're going to get lucky and get a decent LCD screen!

The screen on my M90 is also quite good. Even brightness all throughout with the exception of the darkened corners on the bottom left/right. Not that big a deal though.

Sounds very fustrating problems you have had, this month I have bought an M1710 WUXGA, and e1705 WXGA and both are perfect. Both still display the darkening near the bottom corners. Maybe this has been corrected and if you get another one it will be better.

As I recall, the part number for the M1710 and 9400 screens is the same, at least in the UK. It can be LG Philips, Samsung or (occasionally) Sharp. I think the quality of the screens is not terribly consistent and there were some real stinkers going around when the M1710 was launched.

Is this for E1705 too? Or only for M1710's?

Not sure. It seems kind of a "crap shoot" which LCD's Dell chooses to use in the the different 17" models. Obviously, they are NOT saving the good ones for the M1710's, so it's very likely the e1705's are getting the V2 also.

The E1705 in the USA is equivalent to the 9400 in Europe, therefore I would expect that the E1705 gets the same screens as the M1710.

It's equivalent in the US to the 9400 also. E1705=Dell Home, 9400=Dell Small Business.

I believe the screens used in the 1710 and 1705 are the same.

Anyway, just finished a chat session with Dell support, and it turns out that they supposedly can *not* currently order the NH718 part for replacement because of two reasons. One being that it shows "WU" in the description which they take to mean something different from "WUXGA" (I essentially told them that they are the same type of panel, just with WU being an abbreviation, and everyone here knows this is true) and that difference supposedly invokes the same-for-same rule if your invoice showed "WUXGA".

So, after they didn't-actually-admit-but-we-know-you're-right sorta admitted it, apparently the actual reason is that that panel has "MOD" in the description and therefore can not be physically ordered by them for dispatch.

I'm assuming this means it's a factory only part or some other specialty parameter which their (the first level CSR's) systems just won't let them order.

Would be really nice if they would just standardize on one or two really nice screens and use only those. I know I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra when ordering, just so I can be assured of a good panel, and I think a pretty good number of people here wouldn't either.

C'mon Dell, just toss the crap panels already.

Hi all.

I have recently purchased an inspiron 9400 and have been unimpressed by the panel.

I was wondering if you could tell me how i am to find the manufacturer of my panel as the packing slip simply calls it a "17" UltraSharp Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440 x 900) TFT Display"

When looking at a black background in the dark the black looks more like a dark grey-and the overall brightness seems really poor compared to much cheaper notebook screens that i have seen and used.

Also i was wondering if there are specific drivers for dells panels? as the panel currently uses a generic 'plug and play monitor' driver-could this be the problem?

Cheers in advance

Your LCD brand can be found by running "regedit" and going to this location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Enum\\DISPLAY\\Default_Monitor

If you see "LPL0000" you have an LG. Can't tell you what the other brands will show as. My blacks are black and the screen is bright.

No specific drivers as far as I know. You can mess w/ the color/gamma as people have mentioned but I haven't tried that, try searching here as I know its been mentioned before. I would call Dell and request a replacement until you are satisfied.
