Brand New M1210 Received

Finally, my laptop showed up.

Initial impressions:
  • amazed at the amount of bloatware
  • the machine itself seems to be very well built
  • there does not appear to be any light leakage
  • no dead pixels
  • currently has 80 open processes for all the bloatware
  • has centrino duo sticker instead of core 2 duo sticker which sucks
  • is very light... even with 9 cell battery
  • battery is lose (clicks up and down if you manipulate it) which i dont like. i've seen this on other dells. does anyone know what I am talking about?

I will post a full review shortly! (im posting from the m1210 now )

also, it runs WHISPER quiet... like you can't hear it *at all* from 3-4 feet away.

doesn't appear to have much keyboard flex problems although its more flexible on the right than the left for sure. nothing i'd notice if i hadnt been previously warned about it.

keyboard is very very nice to type on. excellent for laptop.

screen is extremely sharp.

Not even close. It's actually less powerful than the ATI x1400 I believe.

Thats weird. I got my XPS M1210 on the 19th of this month and it came with the Core 2 Duo sticker. Also, my 9-cell battery does not rattle, it is in no way loose. And how can the 7400go be less powerful then the 6800go?
Bigger numbers mean more power from where I come from. ?!? Unless this is bizarro land.

stock 3dmark05 scores 6800 go = 2850 7400 go = 2048

Hey sublime69, congratulations. I have about the same observations as you. LCD seems fine, no dead pixels. Haven't figured out the manufacturer yet but I'm happy with it. Core Duo sticker (oh well), but Core 2 Duo inside (what counts). And yes, my 6 cell battery jiggles slightly. Not a big deal.

Pics are a bit blurry because most had to be taken without flash... so they had low shutter speed.

the m1210 easily plays "return to castle wolfenstein" on high resolution w/ all textures and effects on... it gets extremely good FPS (no slowdowns whatsoever)

hl2:ep1 plays reasonably well. i set resolution to 1280x800 and it plays in native widescreen aspect with no pixel smudging and looks really sharp. i dont get as fluid gameplay as with the older RTCW (based on the old quake engine and with no real physics)... but hl2 is still extremely playable. actually, the touchpad and keyboard are so nicely designed and calibrated that it is very easy to play hl2 with ASDW configuration and using mouse to look around. It can be a bit difficult to aim but its still really fun to play!!

there are no slowdowns whatsoever and the loads between maps in hl2 are very fast. you can tell that the 2GB 667mhz ram and Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz have tons of power... but the video card is MAJORLY holding back the gaming performance.

Still, as I said, this computer VERY adequately plays HL2 and it's an ultraportable. sweet.

You're lucky sublime. Mine has one very tiny dead pixel, but I called Dell and they are sending me a replacement. So I'll have 2 in a short period of time haha... Other than that, my machine is perfecto! I love it!

Don't worry, you're not the only one with Centrino Duo I'm with ya! Haha... Same sepc buddy ^^ I'm too lazy to do a review, so you can do it for me as well since we have same spec. I can contribute some of my pictures on your review if you want.

that REALLY sucks that you have a dead pixel.

as soon as I got my package (my neighbor signed for it because nobody was at my house) I brought it over after visiting home from university and my dad and I poured a drink for ourselves and looked for any flaws. i'm very happy that we couldn't find any. The only thing of concern was that the battery is not completely secure. All the 9-cell batteries on Dells that I have seen have a bit of "jigglyness" to them so I'm not worried. I'm quite relieved at this point that I will not have to send the computer back for any reason.

I'm quite astonished at how cold the computer runs. I can game for 2+ hours on the battery and it is NOWHERE near as warm as my dad's old 400 mhz Dell w/ no video card.
