Do you have a line in on your sound card?

If not that might be why

No. Mic and Line are two different things, however you might be able to USE your mic jack as a Line in, you will need to set up your gain structure properly in order to do so. In other words, find a nice really compressed CD, most pop music these days is. Play it on a deck with a line out, hook the line out into your mic in, and adjust the GAIN on the mic in so that you are not distorting and still getting a strong signal.

A Line in Jack is expecting one thing, a line level signal (.775 volts RMS if I remember right for a 0dB signal, I would have to look it up)

A Mic jack expects a Mic signal which needs to be amplified a considerable amount to be useable. As such it is much more sensitive than a line jack usually, though the GAIN on the mic jacks allow you to compensate for this as mics have different output levels unlike line level.(Well technically you have consumer and pro line level, but that is a different topic, most people only need to worry about consumer)

Well if you are not running your LP player through a phono preamp, as memory recalls they actually required one, a mic in might be the better thing to use. Though it has been long enough since I dealt with LPs and that was only in the early parts of my life before I was interested in sound on a more serious level(My stupid mistake there) I could be remembering wrong. I should look that up sometime.
