NP3880 Sound Problem

Greetings,

My 3880 has started for the 2nd time to have an audio problem that I was unable to fix the first time it happened except by totally reinstalling XP. I really, really don't want to do that again so I am here looking for trouble shooting tips to hunt this down. It MUST be some sort of software issue as the re-install fixes the problem for at least 3 months. Odd thing is I don't install or change anything right before the problem starts.

The audio sounds like it is being put through a Flanger (music effects device sorta like a delay but different). It slows down the rate the sounds play at (not the pitch that is fine) and very rapidly stutters (which creates the flange sound). Also while the sound is stuttering the whole system slows down (clue it may not be only sound related). Thing is it will at times go away for ten minutes or more then return. Does not seem heat related as I will be in the middle to some intense action in Battlefield 2 with no real problem.

Running XP Pro with SP2 and Autopatcher latest.

I have "uninstalled" all the sound devices I can under the Hardware Manager but thing is when I reboot it does not go through the "discovered new device" routine and just seems to reinstall the drivers that are already there. I would love a way to blow away the sound and force a rebuild but I have no clue how.

Let me know what info or what tests you would like me to do and I thank you all for any help.

I have had this issue before as well, and it was not solved by a complete uninstall /reinstall of audio drivers. In fact the only way I have found to fix it is to do a system restore of the day before it started happening, or reinstall like you said.

I really think this is a Windows issue, but can't pin it down. While it occurs, the studdering corresponds to the HD being accessed, but there is never a process using much CPU when it happens. Killing all processes but media players (winamp or WMP dont matter), it still happens. When I load up linux (dual boot) it doesnt happen using media players there.

I haven't had it happen in some time, and I am not sure what to do about it when it does, I have tried everything I can think of, but rolling back windows is the only thing that helps.

Thanks. I run a dual boot also and have no problem in Linux either. Which tool do you use to rollback and keep track of settings? I was going to re-install XP to fix the problem and install the basic tools I use then make a disk image to reinstall from to save time. I hope it does not happen agin but. . .
