CAUTION! Mix up of modem drivers m68xx, and 74xxGX series!

I know 56k modems are seldom used in todays age, but for those who don't have the option of high speed or stuck at a Hotel that only has dial-up, you will find this interesting.

I just wanted to make you all aware that the m68xx and 74xxGX use different 56k modems. There are two that I know of, the Smartlink, and the Conexant. Fizi has both listed in his website. Where the problem lies is that there is no real answer as to which one is in your laptop. It appears early versions of the m6805 and m6807 which were shipped with the (3) (restore CD's) have the Smartlink, and later machines which were shipped with the (restore DVD) have the Conexant. Replacment DVD's which were sent out will have only the conexant drivers unfortunatly.

I used my m6811 DVD to restore my m6805 (big mistake) and ended up spending all afternoon trying to find out why the modem did not work. Windows detected it as a conexant but when the modem attempted to dial, gave an error saying the port was already being used which threw me off thinking it was a software problem. It was indeed a Smartlink.

The bottom line, the Smartlink can be detected under XP as a conexant and appear as nothing is wrong, but when you go to use it, you will get an error. If you have a problem use this methode to test:

Right Click "My Computer" , click "Manage".
Click on Device manager from left column.
Click on Modems in right column to expand.
Double click the modem name to enter into the properties window.
Click the diagnostics tab and click query modem.

If the modem comes back a success, you are fine, if it gives an error such as the port cannot be opened because its in use then you may have the wrong driver.

the first two machines (M6805 & M6807) had Smartlink modems when they shipped. some of the M6809's had them as well, but then Smartlink modems were no longer available (they went out of business, I think), so they were all Conexant from then on (and earlier ones would be replaced with Conexants when repaired once they ran out of Smartlink stock)

I liked the Smartlink ones, myself, the diagnostic utility made it a lot easier to diagnose modem issues

The newer Conexant drivers may work on the Smartlink. Conexant bought Smartlink a while back. I found it out a few eeks ago when I was bored and went on a driver upgrade binge. From their website:
Quote:
Smart Link PC Modem Products Conexant Systems acquired Smart Link's PC Modem chipset business in 2005. As a result of this acquisition, all Smart Link PC Modem products, including SL2800, SmartRISER series, SmartPCI series and SmartUSB series solutions have been transferred to Conexant. To obtain product support and updated modem drivers on any of these products, please contact Conexant through www.conexant.com.
I haven't tried the newer drivers yet, but I have one of the older smartlink branded modems in my m6809.
