MacAfee is such a joke...

New Dell M1710, clean system, tried to run some games, couldn't even get 50 fps in cod2, cpu usage was in constant 20-50%. Obviously I freaked out and thought I got a virus. Then I checked my processes and boom! 12 from MacAfee! It seemed the "antivirus" program was scanning my computer like every 2 secs. So I decided to get rid of this pos, and now I'm running cod2, quake4, css, all in maxed settings...

I mean, an antivirus software is supposed to get rid of the crap on your machine and make it run faster, not load 20 freaking processes and take up 50% of CPU...

it means to protect ur system from malignant attacks - the crap adware, spyware ... & not the crap from lousy software installations

i m not quite sure that i have yet seen an antivirus software that would make system running faster safer (may be) but not faster ...

agreed, some virus scan softwares are much better in utilizing/using system resources, McAfee is obviously not one of those - thx for sharing ur experience cheers ...

Ya I was seriously freaking out for a while because I thought I got hit with a trojan or something...with a brand new machine! turned out MacAfee was killing it.

did you ever tried to remove that f**** piece of crap _completly_ from your machine? If you think that you had done that using that neat "uninstall routine"; forget it, dude! You have to:

- uninstall it via System/Software
- rebooting the machine
- using a good tool to show all processes running, like Process Explorer from SysInternals
- stop the _TWO_ addional left-over McAfee processes
- remove them from your logon procedure by using the autostarts-app from SysInternals
- delete manually the folders from the hidden application folder
- keep in mind: as "unknown" user you might had thought step one solves your problem...

So, what do we learn from that:

- McAfee AntiVirus is a really greedy piece of shitty developed code, crawling deep inside your pc, try to control everything, uses alot /too much of system resources, shows up every minute at least three complete dumb messages like reminders, ad´s and so on and is not removeable by using the so called removing button.

Yea, I agree that McAfee is a POS AV program. Based on my experience, Norton, McAfee, and Kaspersky take too much system resources to do their job. These days, I run NOD32 which is much faster and slimmer than the other AV products.

NOD32 FTW!!

Everyone should uninstall McAffee.. people test against it to assure their malware/virii can avoid detection. And it's a pig.

Nod32 is small, nearly invisible, and free for 30 days..

I tell everyone to try out NOD32. It's got to be the least demanding AV out there. Amazing prog.

screw messing with trying to remove it manually

i use NOD32 and AVG on all the time
never had any problems with them slowing down

they work perfectly together and constantly are on. (i dont just open them when i download stuff)

I have used in the past:

-Kaspersky (very good, but very heavy on resources)
-Norton (uninstalled it after 1 minute of installing it...godd thing id idnt pay for that shi**y excuse for an antivirus that Norton is)
-Panda (meh...nothing special and not so easy on resources)
-McCafee (can't say anything special about it...but MCafee firewall annoyed the hell out of me...SYGATE FTW! Also had hell of a hard time uninstalling that crap. Man, its like they DONT WANT you to uninstall it)
Other non common ones..but they all got removed within 1 minute of running them

NOD32 = best thing that happened to me
AVG = best thing that happened to me for FREE.
i cant believe AVG is 100% free, no need to buy anything.
It works awesome and even pentium 1 could run it

I work for a company, we constantly do virus/spyware/bloatware removal and with that we take off Norton and McAfee, its a pain. But we always replace it with AVG, Ad-Aware and Ewido (which is now incorporated into AVG) Best dam defence we can mount for free. But yeah and we use CClean, RegCleaner and XoftSpy to get rid of those floating files that are left behind after getting rid of the crappers (Norton, McAfee etc) but we still have to go in and clean the registry, reboot and all that fun stuff.
