need advice - HP 8000t or 9000t? Is it worth $200? Specs inside...

Hello,
I am about to order a new laptop, and for the money it seems like the HP 8000t and 9000t offer way more then anyone else. However, I can't decide which model to go with. The 9000t is more expensive, but I can get it with a Core 2 and a 512mb graphics card. The 8000t is less expensive but it just has the first Core Duo - although it runs at a faster speed (2.16ghz).

Take a look at the specs for each below. I'm most curious if the Core 2 would perform faster then the Core Duo even though its running at a higher Mhz. I will use this mostly for application development and of course some gaming (fear/half life 2). Thanks!

Specs for 8000t System:
Core Duo processor T2600 (2.16 GHz)
1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
17" WSXGA (1680x1050)
256MB Geforce Go 7600
100 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Windows XP Professional
Price w/upgrades: $1583.99 (plus tax)

Specs for 9000t System:
Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.0 GHz)
1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
17" WSXGA (1680x1050)
512MB Geforce Go 7600
100 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Windows XP Professional
Price w/upgrades: $1,772.99 (plus tax)

Any thoughts on if its worth the extra $200 for the higher CPU and GPU? After taxes the 8000t is more like $1750 and the 9000t is about $1950, so thats really pushing it for my budget.

Thanks for any input!

I'd go with the dv9000t with the core duo 2.

Make sure to select the OS restore disc...

Best place to buy, NO HASSLE 180 day return window.

I ll go with Intel Core 2 Duo , even running in almost the same frequency Core 2 Duo runs 10-20% faster. Frequency alone doesnt justife a faster processor (example P4 vs AMD64), things like cache, FSB , pipeline stages, instructions per clock etc..shape the real power of the processor.

Intel Core 2 Duo is the first processor so far that their cores share the same cache offering real multitasking, unlike Core Duo which each core sees only their cache (2* 1 MB).

As far for the GPU the 512 RAM of the 9000t , could extend the life of your 3d card, but dont expect major differences over the 256 version cause the card is limited by its 128 bit memory interface.

In my opinion spend those extra 200 bucks, you may regret it in the future if you dont

Think the Core Duo has 4mb of cache, vs 2mb for the Core Duo

Addtionally the dv9000t has a HDMI port.... which gives you a nice clear picture on a HDTV, Plasma, LCD, Projector... Since most current HDTV's require a HDMI input.

(S-video sucks on a 65-70+ inch screen... One of the reasons I ended up returning the dv8000t I had)

Wish HP would put a 7900GS/GTX though.... 7600 while better than the 7400 is allot slower than a 7900GS / GTX...

I'm sort of torn, leaning toward the Dell 17 inchers as the GPU is a SEPERATE part.... HP having a history of integrating the GPU onto the motherboard on the consumer models. (One model of the HP business line 9440 /9240? has a removable gpu...., nice if it fails, sort of moot point though as you can't just drop a faster gpu in it though) Some of the Dells (1705 with 7900GS) being able to take the 7900gtx from the 1710...

Dells have a magnesium alloy Lid upper, lower housing....

Thanks for all the input guys -
I have decided to go with the 9000t - having the larger (and shared) cache will be better.

Also - the HDMI port is awsome since I have a plasma screen TV, I didn't even think of that originally.

I wish HP would offer a 7900 gpu option as well, but I can live with the 7600 I guess. I read on some forum that the 9000t might have the GPU has a seperate part (meaning you could potentially upgrade it), but I kind of doubt that.

I would get a Dell 1705 or 1710 - but to me you just cannot beat the HP price. It has all the top of the line features for quite a few hundred less dollars.

Anyway, I will be ordering my 9000t TODAY!! YEAH
Thanks!

VoltronAD,

Please post back your thoughts on the HDMI output when you get your machine. One website I was reading at stated that to output at 1080 the bottom fiqure (noted below) would have to be greater than 1080. As you can see the HP dv9000t so far as the internal display only outputs at a max of 1050, so this means that it may only be able to output at a max of 720 on the HDTV.

1650x1050

Dell 1705/1710 outputing at max of 1900x1200... but it being DVI only... Most current sets requiring a HDMI input..

Also if you can post some pictures, that will be great

Looks the same as this:

I'd rather see some benchmarks, given the choice... It's under the hood that counts.

PS: Most stores have the dv6000, the dv9000 pretty much "looking" the same....

Thanks WeAreNotAlone, you provide the link in other post and i checked it!
I just want to state that the quality of the case and materials used are also important, not neglecting the specs though.

My previous laptop which i bought over 2 years ago , was the top of the line at that time but the quality of the case was so poor (made out of plastic i suppose). After a while paint was drifting away (thanks to the heat) , and the plastic around the screen was starting to break , some of the keyboard buttons broke etc... Needless to say the laptop died some months ago.
When i bought it i was only interested in the specs, that was a big fault , brand, quality, service, warranty should always matter.

The company which i bought it was AJP ,its a German company i think and i dont recommend it to anyone

Sounds good...

The HDMI port acts just like and external monitor - toggle via FN + F4 - for external, local or both. The display resolution passed when external only is 1920 x 1080 and audio signal is passed through as well. The audio control is also separate, as external audio is not muted when I mute the laptop, and the same goes for volume control.

Hey Volt I just ordered a 9000t

And struggled w/many of the choices you are contemplating.

I did not go with the C2D T7200;(T5600 on mine) due to the modest performance gains I've read about and the debate if C2D is worth it vs CD.

I went with the 256 Go 7600; you can use that xtra cash for extra memory and get a 7900gs and have it installed. Especially since it's an integrated card.

I was a bit miffed that HP did not offer any CD except the T2250 which runs at 533mhz and I need a fast FSB(and 667 ram)-go figure why the only offer the T2250 as a customizable CD option (maybe to force us up to the C2D.

Anywho...Our systems are identical in all other aspects (HD, Memory) but I went with XP MCE....I've 3 HDTV's and I'm clueless if Xp Pro would affect the MCE capability!

BTW....don't worry about the 8000t -the only place you are going to find one is on UBid and it will be Hp Factory Refurbed-I almost payed 900+ when I got caught in a bidding war...LOL

Perhaps all of this a moot point; but HP's 200$ off on the 9000t expires today...so I jumped.

Good luck and let me know what you got.

Thanks!

The Chemist

BTW...Plus PC Magazine gave it a killer review on 9/26/06 (4 of 5 stars with no major gripes)

BTW2....do you or anyone know of a stable, rotatable laptop stand (not tripod) that's reasonably priced and can hold a 17" for my desk?
