Atheros cards and WEP cracking. - Page 2

how is the range in these atheros cards? 100ft?
I never tested max distance but I just put some hard wood flooring in and the halway is 60 feet to the living room. With the intel, I'd get less than 50% signal strength (according to the intel utility). I get full strength with the atheros. Good question. I'll try it on battery and see how far I can get. I'll post later tonight or tomorrow morning. If there any specific tests or info you need, let me know.

Edit: The one problem I am having is with linux although I haven't been able to spend much time on it (work/school/woman). I've tried a bunch of different distros and it doesn't work without kernel mod. lspci shows the atheros but no device files. I'm not sure if it's the pci express architecture but I think that's what's throwing the install for a loop.

Well I pulled the trigger on this today. I was wondering from previous buyers of minipciBIZ how long it took to be deliverd from Germany?

The Atheros Card I just bought is the AR5006EX. It is the lastest/greatest, though there are only a few available in the world currently. I bought off a guy in Hong Kong with the ID GarageSale125 at notebookreview.com.

They are only $68 shipped.

I also have this AR5006EX card, and it works great. Range increase is noticeable (I'm getting Good to Excellent reception where I'd normally get Low to Very Low with the Intel 3945. Installation is a breeze, setup a snap (make sure you disable Super A/G if your router doesn't support it).

The card I ordered has the AR5006EGS chip. What is the difference between that and the AR5006EX?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the main differences between the EG series and EX series of chips is that the EX operates on the 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz radio bands while the EG on the 2.4ghz band only, also the EGS can operate in Super AG mode, while the EX cannot. Oh, and one more...EGS operates in wireless b/g while the EX in a/b/g.

Thanks for the info. Is the lack of ability to operate at 5.0ghz a serious issue?

I think you may get some interference when you have cordless phones operating at 2.4ghz and also Bluetooth AFAIK operates at 2.4ghz.

The 5GHz band is used for 802.11a wireless. 802.11a is mostly used in businesses. I've personally never had to use this.

802.11b and g wireless works in the 2.4GHz band. Home, airport, and coffee shop wireless uses 802.11b/g that both model cards (EG & EX) have.

Thanks for the info. I really don't need to connect to 802.11a so it seems to be a non issue.

After the speedy delivery I finally got to give this card a try, well not a proper try as I don't use wireless at home but doing a scan but is what I found:

With intel 2915: http://ajwwbspc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk...lessbefore.jpg

With AR5006XS (Gigabyte version): http://ajwwbspc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk...elessafter.jpg

Not bad, given that due to the SSID of some of the APs I know where they are located and going through even one wall of an Edinburgh flat is quite good, let alone these distances some of these are going. Nearly everybody seems to have them set on chanel one though, guess that ain't helping matters.

Make of these what you will but I'm pleased with it...

A friend of mine ordered one and should have it by Monday. I'll let you know if we can crack a WEP or not.

Even though I'm not going to attempt to break into anyone else's wireless network, I picked up one of the Atheros AR5006EGS cards off of eBay, and it's fantastic! The range with my network is so much better than the Intel PRO/Wireless card that came in my E1705. This is definitely a recommended upgrade from me for anyone that lives off wireless.

So does anyone have the AR5006EX working in linux? I'm looking at getting an HP dv9000z. It comes with a broadcom card but support in linux isn't great. The atheros cards like the AR5006EX should be supported with the madwifi drivers but I would rather not drop 70$ on a card that isn't going to work. I suppose its a gamble if the laptop will take the card and boot but if linux supports it at least half of my problems are gone.
For those that do have it, are you still thinking this card is an improvement over what you previously had?

Thanks

I just ordered mine. Should be coming in soon. Now, did anyone notice any increase in battery life with this card? Supposedly that is a feature of this card.

u think is a good idea to get one now? or sud we wait until b/g/N are available?

Now, I own two AR5005 cards in both my laptops (see below), and definitely love the extra signal strength and range. What I find odd about the two results above is that with the 4 AP's the Intel card saw, the AR5006 saw them at a lesser signal strength! That is opposite of what I have seen with my AR5005, which shows stronger signal strength for AP's than what the Intel 3945 got. Now, it's nice that the AR5006 can find twice the number of AP's, but it really isn't much use when the stronger ones are at a lesser signal strength, and most of the others are too weak to use! But, my AR5005 works great, and I get 5 bars in my home in places where I used to get 2 bars with the 3945.
