powerbook G4 random shut down

Thread Starter
powerbook G4 works great, but after about 3-4 hours of use it suddenly goes into sleep mode. at first it can be revived and works fine but after a while longer it goes to sleep again and can no longer be immediately revived. if I let it rest for about half an hour I can restart it and its good to go for an hour or so longer

this problem began only a few days ago. about 2-3 weeks after my warranty expired :-) the laptop is just over a year old

it seems as if the G4 is overheating. could that be a problem?
i shut down, took out the battery and held the button to drain the power a
few times. also i checked the setting in system preferences.
i ran the computer just from the power cord, and also just from the battery and the problem seems to persist in both cases. the laptop does seem to get very hot on the bottom.

has anyone had a similar problem?
thanks for any help!

Google for information on how to reset the PMU.

Also, try booting from your original install disks while holding down the option key. Then at the chooser screen click on Apple Hardware Test and, well, run the test.

probably defective heat sensor

I have a year old 15" powerbook, and it has the same problem.

I have done research and it seems that many people have had it too, as you can see if you google "narcoleptic powerbook" or something like that.

I have tried various tricks to try and fix it, since its out of warranty, and it seems like it will go for several weeks, then be fine, then start to act up again.

One thing that helps is unplugging it, removing the battery, and pushing the power button to discharge any remaining charge.

Then plug the battery in and plug it back in.

I won't go into more detail, since there are many other sites about this... Just hope your laptop is still covered by a warranty.

Sounds Thermal but these also have RAM slot issues and if Apple wont cover call us we can repair these as well. The more people w/Ibooks we can help the better as we have a major issue regarding the manufacturer and the MAG-SAFE design on the new powerbooks. The name as well as the basic product was designed by us on or about March of 2004 and it was put into production without our consent. We have proof of this and are persuing it on another front as I didnt feel this was right. (Corporate america needs to steal to survive)? We love the I-books as well Best CS on the planet but I think anyone would get a bad taste from this.. (Repairs are repairs, Laptops are laptops, Customers are customers).. Good luck!

I don't know about the name, but there have been other magnetic power cord solutions before Apple did it. None implemented in laptops that I know of, but the same idea has been used before. You're going to have to try and sue everyone else before you take on Apple.

I agree and I believe the Fryers were first.(Hot oil). But? Mag-safe as well as the adapter was designed here.. (There is a rifle magazine cartridge w/this name also).. Not flaming about it but man it can sure get a guy in an uproar if you put yourself in my shoes.. Maybe I should post the Apple exec's phone number on the web?? (JK).. That would lead to issues).. Anyway thanx on the response however..
