Connectivity problem on a new E1705 :/

So i just recently got my new E1705 . This is my 3rd DELL laptop . I am currently working on a Inspiron 6000 .

THe problem is : when i first connected my e1705 to the internet ( a ethernet cable connected directly to a cable modem ) it said i have LIMITED or NO connectivity . I had similar problems on my previous laptops but then i was using a router . Right now i have a direct cable connection ( screw routers ) .

I reformated HD , installed WInXP using DELL OS cd , istalled all the drivers , antivirus , connected to the internet to see the same connectivity problem .

I`ve tried all possible solutions found on the web , talked to at least 6 different DELL representatives via DELL live chat and nothing . Downloaded and installed SP2 and tried installing it on top of fresh WinXP installation ... same frustrating error messege .

Tests show that network hardware is working properly and is not faulty . I have the newest drivers . I have no wireless internet access available so i cant try to connect to the web wirelessly .

I was wondering if anyone of you had the same problem and what can possibly cause that . May be its DELLs OS / SP2 software ? I am pretty dissapointed since my current system Inspiron 6000 , bought in january 2006 , has no problems at all .
Thanks in advance for any help .

I`ve tried everything , realy . Turning off both Windows and Trend MIcro firewalls and what not . WinXp doesnt seem to be able to acquire my IP address , even tho Win and drivers are freshly installed and are latest versions , and hardware is working properly and without bugs . Any other thoughts ?

I had that problem with mine and it drove me nuts. Finally figured out that I was running on battery and not on AC and the internal network shuts down on battery power.

You can disable this option in the DELL Quickset settings.

To the OP's problem I generally have these issues with Cable Modems (Especially those with VOIP Equipped) A reboot to the modem itself solves the problem. If you happen to have DSL then you have to ensure that you created and defaulted the proper PPPoE settings (Login and Username)

I have a Comcast cable internet . The ethernet cable from the modem goes directly to my desk with a lap on it . Once i plug it in into Inspiron6000 it works just fine . When it comes to my new E1705 i get connectivity error , it just cant acquire that damn IP address .

I talked to like 6 or 7 DELL representatives through DELL Live Chat . Every single one of them was ASSURING me that once i do THIS and THAT my problem will dissapear . And still same conectivity messege .

Any ideas how to reset / reinstall / refresh TCP/IP protocol ? I`ve tried WinsockXPFIX.exe , tried edditing registry and repairing it , applied Micrsoft update dedicated to fix connectivity problem and no results . Going to call DELL and see what they have to say about that , untill then any ideas ? thoughts ? Any help will be appreaciated .

hmmmm

i don't know if you've gotten this fixed yet, but if not, I have two questions ...

1) are you running xp pro? is this the same os as your other system?

2) when you go to the dos prompt, type "ipconfig /all" and look for the ip address....does it start with 169?

if so, try something for me. unplug your modem and router, leave them alone for 20 min or so. plug them back in, and fire up the new system (NOT the one that's working properly). is the connection working now?

I got it online !!! Finaly . And i cant belive how simple the problem was . I did like you said lmcutler , unplugged cable modem for about 25 mins and then plugged everything to my new system ( E1705 ) . Turned it ON ... no Connectivity messege for quite some time , i though its still broken . But still i decided to open IE and WHOAAAAAA , it worked !
At least now i know how to deal with that kinda BS in the future .

cool. i'm glad it worked.

i'm not sure about the "limited connectivity" mesage part of things (it might be the result of having two wireless controls running at once, that's a common problem. windows has it's own control, and most vendors include their own version as well, and neither seems to play nice), but as long as it's working, who cares?

depending on the router, you might not need to wait a full 20 min. i've heard of it resetting pretty quick in some cases. next time you want to switch systems, just adjust the time and see how fast you can get away with.
