USB tv tuner ideas?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. I recently purchased a new M1710. Unfortunately, the newer models don't have the old PCMCIA slots, so my current Kworld tv tuner isn't compatible. I've been doing a bit of research, but there are so many different USB 2 TV tuners out there. Can any of you recommend some? I don't mind paying for it ($50 - $150) as long as its quality. I'd like to have PVR features, like TV capture ect, but again my main concern is picture quality so I'll take that over everything else. Thanks again for any advice.

PS. I had to go with Win XP Pro, not MCE so that's why I didn't purchase dell's tv tuner for MCE.

Try the OnAir HDTV GT from http://www.autumnwave.com/ It's getting great reviews from the forums at avsforums.com

I plan on buying one next week.

JoshuaTU, I'm the Technology Manager at AutumnWave, the North American presence of OnAir Solution. While you may still be considering a bunch of other products, I'd like to at least mention a little bit about the OnAir HDTV GT.

The GT has the latest/greatest 5th generation LG tuner inside, for superior reception. We bundle with the PureVideo decoder, which is among the highest quality decoders available. OnAir Solution developed, patented, and released the world's first USB 2.0 HDTV tuner in 2003. (Well, it debutted in the USA in 2003!) Since then, we've released 2 more products, including the 'Creator' and the 'GT'.

I'm active in the AVS Forum, and provide Technical Support there. I'd be more than happy to provide Tech Support here for anyone that has the OnAir HDTV products.

Let me know if there's any way that I can help you make a decision, even if you do not choose to use our products. Feel free to bounce other questions off me, as I may have experience in those areas too!

Thanks JoshuaTU and tmm0f5!

Hi Ryan. Welcome to the forums! One question. Is AutumnWave going to carry over support for the OnAir HDTV GT to Windows Vista? I've bought too many computer hardware products over the years which were disposed of because the manufacturer wouldn't support it on the next generation OS.

WackyT,
The plan is to support Vista, yes. However, it is likely that official drivers/software won't be finalized until RTM of Vista. (Some of our customers have seen that the GT works in Vista already, but results may vary.)

Thanks,

It sure would be swell if you could talk the powers-that-be into a discount for forum members.

Thanks for the reply Ryan. This is a very tempting toy for my E1705.

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to the notebook world, and while I can do the basics I'm not completely computer savvy. I'm looking for a TV tuner for my new Inspiron E1705 and I'm not sure which ones will be compatible or which ones will work the best. I'll take any advice I can get on manufacturers and systems. Thanks.

Just posted a new thread about this (HDTV tuner in particular, actually) at http://www.notebookforums.com/post24...ml#post2442122. Would be glad to join in with the discussion here.
